On 4/18 at 4pm in @UMBCLibrary, @BmoreDoc of @MorganStateU, @seemadiyer of @EubieBee, as well as Felipe Filomeno and @PNicoleking of @UMBC sit on our panel about Redevelopment and Justice in #Baltimore. #humforum18 ow.ly/cZej30ii1PD
.@AmyBhatt is introducing our panelists: @BmoreDoc, Felipe Filomeno, @PNicoleking, and @seemadiyer #humforum18
Lawrence Brown (@BmoreDoc) is a Professor at @MorganStateU. He starts us off by placing gentrification in historical context: forced displacement of indigenous tribes and Africans. #humforum18
.@BmoreDoc: African Americans fleeing the racial terror of the South and finding weaponized and institutional racism in Northern cities (i.e. redlining). #humforum18
.@BmoreDoc: These policies continue today as exemplified by the White “L” and the Black “Butterfly” #humforum18 medium.com/@BmoreDoc/balt…
Filomeno is discussig gentrification from the perspective of Latinx immigrants in #Baltimore. The Latinx population has grown 64% since 2000, particularly in south and southeast Baltimore.#humforum18
.@seemadiyer is a part of the @bniajfi, which is dedicated to producing reliable and actionable quality of life indicators for Baltimore’s neighborhoods. #humforum18
.@seemadiyer: there are three indicators for gentrification - change in median income (southeast Baltimore); change in education; and change in race #humforum18
.@seemadiyer: another indicator is population growth. For a city that has been experiencing population decline for the last six decades, fast population growth in neighborhoods can cause issues #humforum18
.@seemadiyer: in growing neighborhoods, you are going to hear more issues about parking issues and crimes against property. In stable neighborhoods, you have issues of school quality and marketing. In declining neighborhoods, you have increased poverty, etc.#humforum18
.@PNicoleking: my research looks at the qualitative side. How do people feel about gentrification and deindustrialization? #humforum18
.@PNicoleking: I also look at public markets, particulalry Lexington Market and now Hollins Market #humforum18 bizjournals.com/baltimore/news…
.@PNicoleking ends with recounting a coversation she had today with @bmoretruthful: “We hope that scholars like yourselves, are aware that most of time, resident led
groups impacted by redevelopment are low income women of color. That's who we are.” #humforum18
.@PNicoleking: We need to empower people to make the decisions about what happens in our neighborhoods. It’s nice to encourage 10,000 families to move here, but ask the 10,000 families currently here what they want. #humforum18
Plug for interviews with Lexington Market patrons at baltimoretraces.umbc.edu #humforum18
.@PNicoleking: There is always talk about how bringing in millennials to help the city. #FreddieGray was a millennial and he was already here #humforum18
.@seemadiyer: one major issue that we need to address is that we are the only major East coast city that does not have a major transit system #humforum18 usa.streetsblog.org/2017/04/21/how…
Filomeno: Expand city-wide programs for immigrant homeowners, entrepreneurship, and work force displacement came help against displacement. However, the best thing is federal immigration reform. The solution is multi-level #humforum18
.@BmoreDoc: Brown v. Board triggers a mass exodus of white people from the city. This was subsidized by the federal government in the way of housing loans and interstate highways #humforum18 amazon.com/When-Affirmati…
Question from the audience: What happens after gentrification? @BmoreDoc provides examples of DC, San Francisco, and Seattle as examples of massive displacement. #humforum18
Nia Redmond and Catherine Benton Jones of the East Baltimore Historical Library shares the story of East Baltimore and their hopes for the preservation of their history and a National Gentrification Museum #humforum18 m.facebook.com/National-Gentr…
Redmond: This is not a Black and White issue. This is a community issue. We need young scholars to help us create out digital library. Please contact us at eastbaltimore101@gmail.com #humforum18
