Parashurama is 6th avatar of Vishnu. He is a Brahmakshatriya. Like other avatars of Vishnu, he appears at a time when overwhelming evil prevailed on earth. Born in Tretayuga, he is believed to be still roaming the earth as one of the 7 Chiranjeevis.
He is also referred to as Rama Jamadagnya , Rama Bhargava and Veerarama in some texts. Parashurama is worshipped as Mool Purush, or founder, of the Niyogi Bhumihar Brahmin, Chitpavan, Daivadnya, Mohyal, Tyagi, Anavil and Nambudiri Brahmin communities. #ParshuramJanmotsav
Some 10,000 years ago, in the era of Treta, Mahrishi Bhrigu had a son named Richik, who married Satyavati, daughter of King Gaadhi. Since Gaadhi did not have a heir, Satyavati requested Maharishi Bhrigu to prepare a potion that would result in begetting one.
Bhrigu gave Satyavati two potions, one for her, other for the queen. He had prepared each with desired qualities for the respective families. But Satyavati gave own container to her mother thinking it may yield a better result.
When Bhrigu got to know of this unfortunate exchange of containers he was very upset, He told the princess, his daughter-in-law, your brother will now be born with ascetic tendencies while your son will be one of the most valiant and skilled warriors alive.
Satyavati begged him to correct the mistake somehow. Bhrigu gave her another potion which delayed birth of warrior Brahmin by one generation, Satyavati gave birth to Jamdagni, who remained true to the Brahmin traditions. Later Jamdagni married Renuka!
Then Renuka gave birth to 4 sons, youngest Ram was the one infused with divine warrior attributes. He had inherited the qualities that Mahrishi Bhrigu had desired, along with asceticism of his parents. A unique Brahmin Kshatriya, born with a unique purpose!
At that time, earth was being ruled by Kshatriya kings who had lost their ethical roots. They were committing atrocities on their people. Greed, lust, selfish interests formed the core of their behavior. The Son of Jamdagni would put an end to their terror.
The King of Mahishmati Kingdom Kaartveery Arjun was passing by their hermitage & took rest there along with his soldiers, He was amazed to see that their divine cow Surabhi was easily able to feed his entire troop. Obsessed, he asked Jamdagni for the cow.
When the Rishi refused, king departed in anger. He then sent his sons to steal the cow. The princes were unable to get Surabhi but found her calf and took it away instead. All night long Surabhi cried for her calf, Ram was away to the forest to get firewood.
Upon returning, he saw the sad plight of his beloved cow. Jamadgni n Ranuka told him about the mischief of king n his sons; he set out for the palace with his tree-cutting ax in hand. His anger was extreme for he loved Surabhi n her calf like his own family.
He reached in middle of the night. All were asleep, but Ram had no patience to wait for morning. He hacked down all that came in his way. The King, famous for his valor equivalent to 1000 men was chopped to pieces by his ax. Retrieving the calf, Ram returned.
He brought the calf back to Mother Surabhi, happy in his conquest against the selfish king. Jamdagni was shocked to see his blood-drenched son n warned his against mindless violence. But Ram had seen the debauchery that King lived in n was disgusted by it.
He vowed to rid the earth of all rulers that lived similarly in sin. From that day onwards he carried that same ax as his weapon & became known as Parshuram. It is said that he annihilated 21 generations of corrupt kings, in a seemingly unending rampage.
When he heard Janak was holding a Swayamvar for Sita, he proceeded towards Mithila for an opportunity to find a congregation of all kings at one place. But there came across Ram of Ayodhya, who was virtue personified. Parshuram now knew his mission was over.
Not only was ShriRam unparalleled in valor, but also possessed a selfless stoic spirit. The perfect combination that Parshuram had searched for in every king he had encountered. He surrendered his weapons to ShriRam & finally proceeded to take Sanyaas. 🙏
Today is Vamana Dwadshi, the day Bhagwan Vishnu incarnated as a midget brahmin to tame the inflated ego of King Bali, grandson of Bhakta Prahlad and the erstwhile ruler of the three lokas. Read the story in the poetry thread that follows.
Mudras are specific hand positions used in Yogic tradition to facilitate smooth flow of various life energies through the human body. The word Mudra literally means ‘Seal’ (symbol) in Sanskrit. In Yoga each Mudra is a Seal of one specific life force.
Universe is made of 5 elements, and each finger represents one of them. The thumb represents Fire (universal consciousness); the index finger Air (individual consciousness); the middle finger Akasha (connection); the ring finger Earth (life); the little finger Water (flow).
When the 5 elements in our body lose their mutual balance, not only do we lose spiritual and emotional equilibrium; on the physical plane too various ailments can arise as a result. Mudras can help us restore that balance and gain direct benefits in all 3 spheres.
Our biggest excuse is when so many translations are available of every scripture that we ever want to read then why take up the extra load?
What we forget is much is lost in translation n each translation is affected by the translator’s individual understanding of the text.
Our scriptures are multi-layered. Every time we read, we may open another layer. But these layers are lost in translation n we read same layer each time, the one that translator opened. If it isnt in sync with our current spiritual stage, then we may miss the point entirely!
Why does gotra of a daughter change when married? Is there any logic behind it?
Infact there is an amazing genetical system we follow through Gotra Gyan.
The word GOTRA is formed by combination 2 sanskrit words Gau (cow) & Trahi (shed). So gotra basically means cowshed.
Gotra is like cowshed protecting a particular male lineage. We identify our male lineage/gotra as descendants of the 8 great Rishi (Saptarishi + Bharadwaj rishi). All other gotra evolved from these only.
Each human carries 23 pairs of chromosomes each with one from each parent.
