Thread) Well there you go: the Minerals Council of Australia rep #BHP, #RioTinto & #Glencore couldn't resist responding to the Kerry Schott's comments that the push for new #coal plants in Australia doesn't stack up financially #lignite#auspol

2) On an earlier thread I thought the MCA would duck for now & respond in the future - but the #coal lobby in Australia are getting desperate & can see how fast the case for new coal globally is collapsing. Desperate times breed desperate PR #auspol

3) There’s a few things worth noting about their latest media release – the MCA have opted to focus their criticism on Kerry Schott
4) and have opted to ignore the damning comments of Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg who said
5) So the only response the MCA made about Frydenberg’s comments was this
6) When the MCA talks about allowing generation options “to operate without subsidy” they mean they want the Renewable Energy Target & state-based renewable targets for #wind & #solar abolished – they don’t mean pricing carbon to reflect damage done to the global #climate
7) #BHP boast to shareholders they make investment decisions assuming a carbon price of US$50/tCO2-e by 2030 (p11); but that’s for a 2°C temp increase not 1.5°C – but BHP’s Australian lobby group urges decisions based a carbon price of ZERO bhp.com/~/media/587499…
8) Then the MCA go on to talk about “facts” and the need for analysis of costs of different technologies – the problem they have is that the privately own power utilities have already crunched those numbers and decided #coal doesn’t stack up
9) Even MCA member companies @Engie and @EnergyAustralia have decided new #coal is a dud but the MCA’s not listening – instead they opt to give more weight to the #coal exporting companies – who actually represent a minority of the MCA’s broader membership
10) then the MCA cite the Solstice/GHD study they commissioned which came in with some very low numbers on new #coal in Australia – this study was dissected by the AFR’s @OBenPotterafr.com/business/energ…
12) in short the latest MCA media release is notable in reflecting a combination of defensiveness, deep denial of how uneconomic new coal plants are in Australia & how little they think the global #climate really matters #auspol

2) In the campaign Hodgman said the current federal laws are adequate. In short, only donations over $13,500 this year will have to be disclosed, increasing in in following years in line with CPI #tasvotes#politas#tasvotes201
3) Here’s an earlier thread of mine on the origins and problems with the current federal political donations laws #tasvotes#politas#tasvotes2018
