#repealthe8th #together4yes #nursesTFY
Thread;
I've started off very shy at work about my pro-choice views. Only close colleagues, who I would consider friends, I would disclose my disgust at the hyprocrisy of the whole thing & how it can effect a person's health.
Over the last 18months every single one of my FB posts has been pretty much about repeal & the same few hardcore repealers like myself would click like on them. None of my colleagues did but whatever...
But surprisingly over the last few weeks, one by one of my fellow nurses have stopped me and on the quite whispered in my ear that they agree with me. I can not tell you how heart warming this is.
I had one nurse, busy mother of 4, tell me she has had close friends go to the UK and agrees it's a hypocritical situation to be in. She and her family are all based north rural Cork and are voting YES.
A discussion started yesterday at work and for once not started by me, on how awful the NO posters are and how they do not show the real impact of a crisis pregnancy or somepne who may have health issues.
That was another seperate 5 nurses all voting YES and their families. I recently worked in a Cardiac ICU (I'm based in a General ICU) and I wouldn't know the staff too well there. Another conversation was started (not by me!) and all the nurses there are also voting YES.
People who work directly with the sick and those with chronic conditions see how much good health means for them. We see how much they value their lives, being healthy for their children & being able to participate in a normal daily life.
Chronic health conditions are not a rarity. They are not an invisible group of people. They are all around us. They are in our hospitals right now. They are at home, probably doing chest physio and on home oxygen. They are you neighbour, friend, family and possibly you.
To say to them "if you get pregnant we have to wait until a 'real & substantial' risk of death before termination of pregnancy" is to me and to a lot of my fellow colleague's just unacceptable and quite plainly cruel.
Instead these people are already boarding flights, with their nubulisers, their medications, the heart problems, their uncontrollable diabetes etc etc.
They are not waiting to get even further sick. I'm canvassing for them. I'm advocating for them. I see you, I've minded you and I really, really care about you. Please vote YES. Let me and my fellow nurse's mind our patients and stop sending them abroad. Thank you!
