Invitation to established &well-informed Irish feminists to reach back, not jonly to raise up those excluded, but also to bring in those who need to learn. Share ur spaces, ur knowledge. Some of us need to unlearn, some have no access to learning, others don't know where to begin
'Do the work' is only helpful when there are signposted paths to knowledge. Off social media, there is very little written about Irish feminism, particularly the modern movement. Meetings don't help rural learners.
'Get out and meet people' doesn't help those with restricted mobility or those who live in villages & towns without like-minded types or transport out of there.

So, as I've found this useful, decided to run the known candidates, in no particular order, for #aras18 through a search. Used dates May 20th - May 31st, the time when you'd most expect tweets about #repealthe8th.
Sean Gallagher, @seangallagher1

Nothing about #repealthe8th. Almost exclusively about his book. Moderately active tweeting.

Did I ever tell ye about the time #Gemma4Aras18 contacted me by DM to instruct me not to use the #MaryBoyle hashtag? 😂😂😂 #SueMeGemma
#MaryBoyle's cousins @joecraig79 & @JosieCraig1 also have stories about #Gemma4Aras18's behaviour at that time & can confirm I tried to calm things down. Causes are more important than personalities & at that time GO'D was Mary Boyle's best chance for justice. #SueMeGemma
That being the case, I advised both @JosieCraig1 & (especially) @joecraig79 to let it go, despite the injustice of being excluded from GO'D's campaign for their cousin #MaryBoyle. I think that was the right advice at that time, but things have changed! #SueMeGemma

If you all would allow me, I’d like to talk a bit about the recent referendum we had back in Ireland. On May 25th we removed the constitutional ban that denied abortion to all women except in the case of certain death. #Repealed
I understand that this might be a difficult topic for a lot of people. And that’s ok. But what my country went through was extremely difficult and while it was an extremely tough task, I am so proud of the outcome and of what we managed to do with dignity and respect
A bit of a back story. Many of you may recall in 2015, Ireland voted to legalise gay marriage. I was living in Finland at the time and I flew #hometovote for that. I would never have missed that vote.

Oh the number of times that got said to all of us, by people who didn't understand the importance of breaking the taboo around the work abortion.
I had people tell me so many times that the abortion rights campaign @freesafelegal needed to change its name or we would never #repealthe8th
That @freesafelegal needed to rebrand, or would not be taken seriously or be interviewed by media. While I was regularly on local, national & International media.

To UK ppl talking about Irish vote to #repealthe8th and #brexitshambles, why UK referendums either sink without trace or create massive, unintended geopolitical self-harm: Ireland preps for years, UK turns up at the marathon starting line in novelty costume with no training 1/n
Irish ppl voted on specific change to written constitution, based on a fair idea of what the enacting legislation would be.

Brexit: open-ended question, little discussion of how it would work, no enacting legislation, no clear way to interpret result vis a vis Parliament.
Irish political system worked rigorously through the EVIDENCE and testimony; experts, affected women, etc. in disciplined + public way with a well-reported parliamentary committee to deliberate, resulting in some politicians changing their minds.

British system: did not.

Thread on #8thref #repealthe8th #irelandreferendum results.
1) Bottom line: On 25th May 2018, this little guy (12 week scan) & future generations of unborn boys & girls had their right to life in the womb removed from our constitution to introduce abortion
2) We would not have had the ref. yesterday had #SavitaHalappanavar not died of sepsis & medical negligence while suffering a miscarriage in October 2012 & had her death falsely blamed on the 8th Amendment, initially by @GalwayProChoice in cahoots with @KittyHollandIT @IrishTimes
3) For more on the real facts behind the #SavitaHalappanavar case, see here:

Plus, a thread on how transwomen retain (at least some) male privilege 👇🏾
What is #maleprivilege? It is freedom, resources, rights, and respect granted instantly to any male person upon (or even before) birth, simply for being male. Having an advantage over another group of humans doesn’t just stop at laws.
When men don’t feel constantly threatened with violence and harassment for just existing. When medical conditions affecting males are given more funding and are more rigorously researched. When men get more pay and are promoted faster due to being seen as more competent in jobs.

How gender identity politics is endangering #WomensRights masquerading under the guise of “progressivism”- or in other words, as I said to this @notokyriarchy fatherfucker, an #MRA’s dream come true
- (thread)
I shouldn’t have to explain the realities of sex-based oppression in 2018! #Female is a biological sex. #Gender is the roles and norms that are imposed on those with female bodies to subjugate them to males for free sexual, domestic, and reproductive labor.
No matter how many genders a given culture had or recognized, somehow, the half of the group with a cock and balls (males) knew which other half of the group to forcibly impregnate (“#NonMen”, according to some). 🤔🤔🤔

What swung the vote to yes (#repealthe8th) was the personal stories of women who had to go abroad, who were forced to carry to term. Meanwhile the UK establishment is bent on going ahead with Brexit in spite of all the heart-rending stories of @The3Million and @BritishInEurope 1/
Never during the Stronger In campaign were we actually talked about as people - with homes, families, friends, who contribute. Axel Scheffler said in his moving speech that the Leave vote hurts and makes him angry every day, it felt like a bitter rejection 2/
The way to dehumanize people is two ways.
1. Numbers game: talk about people in "liquid metaphors" (floods of people, streams of migrants)
2. Linking EU citizens and crime: talk about "EU killers we failed to deport" (@DailyMailUK) 3/

1) So here's a little tale of #hometovote and #abroadforyes I had yesterday
2) was on the FB group Abroad for Yes which essentially is Irish (and some non Irish) people abroad who don;t have a vote sending funds to those who have to enable them to get home to #repealthe8th
3) It's a wonderful place. People y/day buying last minute flights home for hundreds and being fully funded in less than 30 mins. People chipping in what the can, we nearly broke paypal

We really need to talk more about #abortion as an option for women.
It's hard to say this and hard to hear it for many, but just because you discover you are pregnant doesn't mean you must carry that pregnancy to term. Your decision will last the rest of your life--and the rest of the life of any child you decide to carry to term.
#abortion
And no, I am not advocating #abortion.
I'm advocating thinking about parenthood & all it entails.
Because once you have a child, you can't just walk away from that life.
And women/girls are talked into maintaining pregnancies every day.
More discussion would change that.

Here’s a test for the antichoice campaigners that come knocking on your door. Ask em if they believe abortion is murder. They’ll mainly say yes. #together4yes #8thref #repealthe8th ➡️
Now ask if they believe a 14 years sentence is enough for a girl taking an abortion pill, or if the full mandatory life sentence for murder should be the maximum term. Now watch them scramble. ➡️
So far I’ve found it goes one of these ways: a) the old reliable side step that they also use for the rape question. ➡️

1. Thread on cronyism, the abortion industry and the Government.

2. In the midst of the #cervicalcheckscandal other unsavoury details about the Govt. have emerged. These facts help to explain what exactly Tony O'Brien (Director General of the HSE) was doing as a non-executive Director of the Board of Evofem Devices & why Min. Harris approved.
3.This arrangement occurred in the middle of a flu season epidemic in Jan 2018. A peak number of people of 714 were left on trolleys in one day. Mr Varadker is quoted as having supported this unusual decision.

Ok I’m going to share a story with you regarding a crisis pregnancy I had many years ago, I have previously shared this story on my own account but think it might be good to revisit it. I was 15 when I became pregnant, 15 when I gave birth too. My eldest is now 27 #togetherforyes
I concealed my pregnancy for 5.5 months, they were very frightening times indeed. I was in school in 5th year in an all girls school. I went back to school three weeks after delivering my baby. This photo is of my and my lovely little one when she was 4 weeks old #togetherforyes

A quick thread on the use of mental health by antichoicers, and why it’s both harmful and wrong. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Sadly this is something that we’re ignored in this country for too long, and it’s still under resourced. #8thref #together4yes
Antis are claiming that abortion will basically be widespread and a free for all if it’s allowed on mental health grounds. This is insulting not only to women who need abortions, but also further stigmatizes mental health. ➡️
I see a “fact” being thrown around by antis is that “97% of all UK abortions are on mental health grounds”. Yes, 97% of UK abortions are on health grounds. Yes, the majority of these are mental rather than physical health. But it’s misleading to state that this will happen here.

Thread;
I've started off very shy at work about my pro-choice views. Only close colleagues, who I would consider friends, I would disclose my disgust at the hyprocrisy of the whole thing & how it can effect a person's health.
Over the last 18months every single one of my FB posts has been pretty much about repeal & the same few hardcore repealers like myself would click like on them. None of my colleagues did but whatever...
But surprisingly over the last few weeks, one by one of my fellow nurses have stopped me and on the quite whispered in my ear that they agree with me. I can not tell you how heart warming this is.

(Thread) Last week I spoke at a @DroghedaT4Y public meeting about the 8th amendment's impact on a pregnant woman's right to consent to medical treatment. I read out the orders the HSE asked the High Court to make against Mother B.
I was asked by @Elainemathews09 if they could be read anywhere. So I'm sharing the most noteworthy now.
The first was an order to have the proceedings heard in camera (so they could not be reported). We consented to this for Mother B's privacy. But after we won the case, the HSE fought (unsuccessfully) our application to have this order lifted.

A thread on the long running rebellion that eventually forced the government to call a referendum to #repealthe8th - photo is us on the February 1992 X-case march - the point at which the tide turned & lead to the #Together4Yes to get rid of #8thref this May
Our involvement goes further back, WSM formed in 1984 but those members had fought introduction of the 8th as part of the Anti-Amendment Campaign. Felt AAC was too defensive through and there was a need to always include a 'womens right to choose' on every platform
In 1984 Eileen Flynn sacked from teaching job at New Ross convent school - Jesuit priest wrote “Ms Flynn’s pregnancy is significant only as being incontrovertible evidence that her relations with the man in whose house she resided were in fact immoral...

My first time listening to @ghook's Saturday Sit-In. Extremely impressed by @LaraDungan's emphatic argument in favour of #RepealThe8th. A shame it's being broadcast at 8am on a Saturday though. People (myself included) have mixed feelings about George, but it's worth a listen.
I was dismayed to hear the usually wonderful @TLoweBL trying to equate the life of a foetus (or unborn baby if she prefers, but that's a semantic argument) to that of a woman of childbearing age. The two are almost entirely incomparable. #RepealThe8th #TogetherForYes
A foetus and an unborn baby are the same thing. When a foetus is born it becomes a baby. When a baby is born it ceases to be a foetus. The choice of word is a communications decision. As a comms pro, @TLoweBL should understand that better than most. #RepealThe8th #TogetherForYes

Good morning. I'm Claire Cullen-Delsol @DelsolClaire I'm 33, married to Wayne and have two kids, Carla 10 & Nathan 4. I'm a member of @TFMRIRE and have campaigned for #repealthe8th since 2015. Here's me on the right.
A bit of background on me, I was born in Dublin, raised in Carrick on Suir, moved to Cork for College, met Wayne, had Carla, moved to Waterford, got degree, got married, had Nathan. I work full-time for a not-for-profit, and my hobbies include food & jigsaw puzzles.
In 2015 I found out I was pregnant with our 3rd baby. Nathan was only 1, Carla was 7. I was working a job with a 100km commute & long hours & pregnancy was not in the plan. But as my dad says, "we plan, God laughs". It didn't take long to get excited about another baba.
