#WhitenessToldMe that only bad people are arrested or detained by police. Reality showed me how bullshit that was when a cop made my husband lie on the ground with his hands behind his head because he "looked suspicious."

We were literally just walking home from the minute mart down the road, yet this cop felt that my husband was suspicious and needed to be not only frisked, but made to lie on the ground face down while the cop ran his name.

You know who DIDN'T have that happen to them?

Me, the fucking American saltine who makes bleached chalk look tan. No, I got to stand there and watch while this happened, and was even treated like I was some sort of fucking victim of this man who I was with.

When I tried to speak up for my husband I was told that they'd "received reports" of suspicious activity in the area of a man that looked like my husband. I tried to tell them he'd literally been with me the entire fucking day in our house and hadn't left until just now.

This cop was so convinced he'd find something on my husband, a Native American man who has dealt with stuff like this most of his life because they assume he's some sort of Mexican gang member due to his "body type" and "posture", that they made us wait until the search came back

Guess what they found?

NOTHING

The cop only then let my husband get up, and without apologizing or anything, told him to stay out of trouble and left. Since then, it's been a struggle to even convince my husband to leave the house. He literally refuses to leave the house unless someone "white" is with him.

While he and I try to joke about me or someone else being his "helper whitey" or "token whitey" it's getting more and more disturbing to see that my skin color is often the only thing protecting me from a fucking gun being pulled on me just for existing.

#WhitenessToldMe to trust the police and that they would do the right thing, that they were there to protect us. Yet what they should have told me is that it only applies to if you're white as fuck or you're in lock step with what they want (and still white).

Before I'd met my husband, I never once worried about an officer taking out his gun on me. I'd never seen someone when pulled over have their wallet, license, and everything on the dash in plain sight along with their hands on the dash.

My husband showed me that pretty much everything #WhitenessToldMe was complete bullshit. He showed me that if you don't look the right way, you're nothing but a potential criminal to them.

(Yes, we did report the cop for what he did, he didn't even get a slap on the wrist and we were told that he was acting "in the line of duty")
