Students of color feeling marginalized in STEM are not always people in need of remedial programming and assuming they need remedial programming is really problematic/hella racist Learn to talk about people of color like we're the same species as you

Tomorrow and Tuesday I’m attending the #astro2020 decadal early career researchers workshop and as part of the requirements to attend, I had to read about 200 pages of (publicly available) documentation relating to the last decadal. I learned some things! 1. Apparently the NASA budget doubled between 1988 and 1991

There is seriously a thread of white women in my mentions very committed to denying white women's complicity in white supremacy, in response to a tweet from a Black Lives Matter organizer who has, you know, thought about this for longer than 5 minutes When I pointed out to one of them that she was a repeat offender, she said I had cyberbullied her when calling her out on something I saw her do last year by letting folks know that her response to me was condescending and privileged

PARTICLES FOR JUSTICE IS LIVE! I am proud to be a co-author on this statement from high energy physicists:

particlesforjustice.org "We write here first to state, in the strongest possible terms, that the humanity of any person, regardless of ascribed identities such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, religion, disability, gender presentation, or sexual identity is not up for debate."

Thing I felt grateful for today: as a child of divorce and an international activist family, I spent a lot of time on planes and sometimes in passport offices alone, and along the way, many adults took an interest and talked to me and this meant I never felt alone or scared Props to the woman at the passport office who enjoyed my diatribe about Jane Austen and later mailed me an old BBC adaptation that I hadn’t seen. Btw turns out a 13 yo needs a parent present to renew a passport, much to my dad’s chagrine lol

This tweet 👇🏽 is flat out wrong. Speaking as someone who does gender studies in addition to particle physics — gender studies is actually a notoriously difficult field to get published in, harder than physics actually, and only a few journals are really taken seriously. It was actually easier for me to get a peer-reviewed paper on gender studies published in an astronomy journal than to get one published in a gender studies journal. I’ve now been successful in both. Let the critics say the same. ;-)

Today took more out of me than it was supposed to, & I want to remind white people that what seems like “grammar” to you can actually be a very deep issue for Black people. Whether we are talking AAVE or how to make our struggles manifest in a language never meant to include us. Standard professional English is not intersectional. As Adrienne Rich said “this is the oppressor’s language yet I need it to talk to you.” So we need to sit with our discomfort about new words and even new phrases that violate grammatical traditions.

“Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, a theoretical physicist at the University of Washington at Seattle who has spoken out about racism and sexism within the field, believes the more pressing question is why Strumia was allowed there in the first place.” gizmodo.com/male-physicist… I highlighted the dearth of Black women in European particle physics: “The numbers for Black women in Euro high-energy physics are even worse than in the U.S., and one would hope that they’d recognize that our growing intersectional discourse has something to offer them.”

Let’s all be clear on this. CERN is not a European facility. It is an international facility, by historic design. CERN certainly makes a scene about this internationalism in its PR. I would hope its meeting organization would reflect this.

Since people are curious about my take on this incident: despite being a visible feminist in the high energy community, and one of the most widely published from that community on feminism, I was not invited to participate. So the fact that fuckshit happened is not surprising. I know that sounds like an egotistical response, but being a Black woman means having to know your own worth because no one else is going to give two flying fucks about giving you credit.

For folks who are not watching this live: Flake has voted yes in committee but says he will not be comfortable voting yes on the floor without a “limited one week FBI investigation” — this is a major development and yes, a small victory Flake is giving Collins and Murkowski some cover, which gives the conservative Democrats cover, which means that although the committee can’t delay the floor vote, McConnell may have to in order to secure the votes

When I was a teenager, I didn’t really understand feminism besides the importance of creating equal opportunities for women and the importance of valuing housework. I thought our problems were legal and caused by a few powerful assholes who wouldn’t budge and some harassment. I’m now in my mid-30s, and I think all men and a not small number of women are part of a brutal patriarchal system that teaches us from a very early age to accept abuse.

It has weighed heavily on me that I will be at the Library of Congress speaking while Prof Blasey Ford testifies in front of a hostile Congress. As a survivor, this has weighed on me. These Republicans dreaming of settling Mars are also hoping to permanently settle our bodies. There are many liberal men. White men. Black men. Gay straight and bisexual men who join them in thinking that bodies are theirs. Patriarchy is heading for Mars unless we nip this shit in the bud.

I admit it. In college I did terrible things to my classmates: I talked to them about racism, even though they didn’t like that. I reported an early case of online bullying to the deans and got my former roommates ad boarded. Oh and I told my ex’s parents he was hitting me. I hope nobody finds out what I was like during my college years, since apparently we were all little shits like Brett Kavanaugh

You know why I get so emotional about the New York Times being so terrible now? Because I asked for the NYT for my 15th birthday. All I wanted was a subscription to the NYT. And now they are disappointing as fuck. I read the NYT on the school bus from the ghetto in East L.A. to my fancy magnet on the west side every day for two years because I wanted to be someone who knew about the world and not just the disparities between the different ends of Los Angeles

I saw this story and was like heeeey water is wet and also when will these people ever think about asking all racial minorities at the same time? or disaggregating by race? whatever, we know the answer. physicsworld.com/a/isolated-fem… besides my snarky comments on CAPTAIN OBVIOUS, there is also the matter of recognizing the filtering effect associated with who stays, especially for Black, Latinx, and Native students who are almost always a one of a kind in their programs

Why I am boycotting The Atlantic, reason n+1, presented as a screenshot Not to say that women can’t be sexual abusers. Sojourner Truth was a victim of at least one, maybe two. But, that headline is not intended to create space and healing for survivors of that kind of abuse. It’s about suggesting that patriarchy and rape culture aren’t connected.

Brett Easton Ellis wrote a book about Kavanaugh and his prep school friends and y’all said it was unrealistic and misogynist but anyway I remain a fan of American Psycho because I went to Harvard and yes the book exaggerates some things. But only some. Also Glamorama totally predicted the horror show that reality tv and social media would become

Yup. I almost quit physics when I found out I would have to share a department with my harasser. Needless to say, it’s cost me a lot of money. The only reason I didn’t is because @MrProfChanda talked me down and came up with an (expensive) plan to give me some space while also allowing me to take a needed opportunity

Watching Nappily Ever After and totally aware that after, I’m going to be upset, because there won’t be another new Black movie for me to watch I just shouted “Y’ALL DON’T KNOW MY LIFE” after the first goddamn line.
