What people don't get about Beto O'Rourke vs. Ted Cruz is the same thing they didn't get about Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump. Social change and the marginal progress of equality has made the right wing in this country impervious to reason and beholden to prejudice. Ted Cruz could be wrong 99 times and right once... just ONCE and the right will immediately embrace him. Beto O'Rourke can be right 99 times and wrong once... just ONCE, and the right wing will hold that against him till his grandchildren have died.

You know what doesn't stop suicide? Posting a Facebook update every six months in response to a celebrity's suicide that says, "If you ever feel like killing yourself, reach out to me." Or, "I'm always here for you. Call me if you need me."

#WorldSuicidePreventionDay You know what DOES stop suicide? Talking to people you care about. Listening to their problems. Especially being mindful of and being present in the lives of loved ones that you *know* are at-risk of suicide because of depression, anxiety or PTSD.

The more important question is this: why do hidden people in the White House who never got a single vote get to decide the direction of our government? The only thing worse than a criminal in the White House is unidentified unelected potential criminals making his decisions. What the NYT op/ed White Dude is saying this: Trump is possibly a criminal, probably bad for the country and definitely an amoral prick, but since he is helping us cut taxes and make the rich richer, we will continue to protect him by not letting him fuck up our plans.

THREAD: As an asylee and former detainee at a private prison contracted by ICE, this story is not shocking to me. In my time in ICE detention, I witnessed multiple instances of sexual harassment and heard stories of abuse and assault from fellow detainees.
apnews.com/a63fdcec347b41… First you need to know the size of the population of immigrations - both documented and undocumented - that pass through detention facilities run by the DOJ or their contractors. It's in hundreds of thousands. Per CAP, that number was 400,000 in 2015 alone americanprogress.org/issues/immigra…

Good morning. It's a great day to yet again explain why Trump won and what you can do going forward to both defeat fascism in America now and stop its spread in the future. See: “The people who hate Trump the most are the people who have been running Washington for decades." That my friends isn't a quote by me. It's a quote by White Liberal darling Glenn Greenwald in his profile in The New Yorker today. And if you think I'm putting that out of context, here's the full quote and the story: newyorker.com/magazine/2018/…

My mom died of cancer in April after a long and grueling battle. I don’t want John McCain to suffer. But he is not a hero. He voted again and again to hurt poor people and minorities. He made his choice. I hope when he passes on, it’s in peace - even tho he denied it to so many. John McCain would be a hero if he stood up in 2003 and said: “My fellow Americans, I cannot in good conscience vote to start a war in Iraq. Thousands will die. Millions will lose their homes. Millions more will become refugees.”

Did he? No. He voted for all that.

"Josh, so like, are you EVER gonna get married again and have kids?"

Me: "Nope."

"BUT EVERYBODY DOES IT!"

That's it. That's the *only* good reason anyone ever has. It's never about, "It will make you happy." (Let's not discuss the, "She will cook and clean for you!" part...) I'm happy. REALLY HAPPY! I have my own wonderful place. I'm working on graduate degree with guaranteed funding. I volunteer at the shelter. Always have doggo friends at home. I have awesome friends. In super good health. And have nerdy hobbies to enjoy. But it's not enough. NOP!

Here's a thread on how the new Stephen Miller rule is going to immediately affect pretty much every asylee. That's because almost all asylees have at some point received government assistance. Allow me to explain: Almost everyone who is an asylee - barring a few dozen people I'm sure - are not millionaires who are independently wealthy. They have little money to start a new life in America and even less to pay for immediate needs when they are granted asylum.

The worst part of the latest attack in Stephen Miller's war on anyone who is not White? By tonight, everyone will go back to make sly jokes about Trump's hair on Twitter. The only people who will protest are people like antifa, or the very targets of those schemes. Progressives who disagree with it will continue fighting the 2016 primaries like they have for he past two years. Republicans who disagree with it will Rubio under the rug. Moderates will put "I don't discuss politics" in their dating profiles while fascists claim another victim.

You won't find a dozen Republican senators or house members to impeach Trump if he admitted today to complete collusion. You won't find half a dozen. I'd be surprised if you found TWO. The law is only the LAW so long as those responsible for upholding it carry their duties. These are the same people - and have the same constituency - who trampled all laws to disenfranchise Black people. Separate but equal? Remember that bullshit? Laws mean nothing if those tasked to ensure their application are utterly disinterested in doing so.

I just want to add to the last tweet a bit because I think it's important. The reason you can't reach Trump voters, and really, any group of racist people is because their main creed - the defining trait the possess - is racism. It dictates any and all their beliefs. You can find a video of Trump, on his knees, kissing Putin's feet and saying, "I will do as you command me, master." and most Trump supporters will be indignant in their support for him. It's not because they can't see or understand #TrumpPutin or #TrumpCohen. It's racism.

So watched Jurassic World 2 last night with @SVellone77. Probably my second favorite movie of the entire series after the original. I was fun in the OBVIOUS CGI way. But I found the dark messaging and emotional moments really touching, especially now. I think what really got me with Jurassic World 2 was the value we place on living beings: it's only and only monetary. The dinosaurs have to die - even according to our heroes - because they are already dead as far as "we" are concerned. That they live now is immaterial.

Could you help or signal boost, please? Been talking to this kid for a few days. He's escaped transphobic violence in Texas, but is now on the verge of being homeless in California because his family here is kicking him out after finding out he's trans. gofundme.com/homeless-trans… I've been trying to remotely get him and his friend to find support through social services, which they are trying to get and qualify for. The problem is that the family member he trusted to stay with is extremely transphobic as it turns out. He has no chance with them.

I have barely said anything about the fascist Trump policy of separating children from their families who are seeking asylum. Many of you know I'm an asylee. Many of you know I'm a refugee as well. But most of you don't know I became a refugee at the age of 6. This is hard for me I keep seeing people saying things like, "I wonder what is going through the mind of all these kids who are running away from a war with your family, with nothing but the clothes on their backs."

I know what those little minds are thing, friends. I was one of them 30 years ago.

There's this thing that bugs the crap outta me & it just did again with a tweet re; Chris Hardwick. This, "I respect women" trope that some men perform. It really ticks me off. Dude, you don't have to "respect" anyone just because they are a certain gender. That's infantilizing. To say, "I respect women" is like saying, "I respect people with dark hair" or "I respect people who arms". No one is asking you to extend blanket "respect" to people. And what does "respect" even mean? Not being a dick to people is not respect. Not being abusive is not respect.

Couple of things in the wake of Anthony Bourdain's death about suicide:

1. Taking your own life is the most terrifying experience and hence the hardest thing to do.

2. The amount of courage that it takes to end your life is something you cannot fathom until you've tried it. Another thing that people who've never had to deal with suicidal thoughts don't get is that calling people who take their own life "cowards" is probably the most laughable comparison you could ever make because often cowardice is the biggest barrier in taking your own life.

So about this "Blue Apron" b.s.

You realize that Snap benefits come in the form of a card, right? That you're not handed cash? That you cannot buy alcohol or cigarettes with it?

This isn't "Blue Apron". It's "Feeding Crap" to the most vulnerable members of society. First of all, let's establish WHO gets Snap. There's a limit. If you make above these amounts, NO SNAP FOR YOU!

1 member household: $1,265
2 member household: $1,705
3 member household: $2,144
4 member household: $2,584
5 member household: $3,024
6 member household: $3,464...

Gather round, children, as I tell you a story about my introduction to Washington D.C., American racism and American "exceptionalism". The year is 2005, I'm a journalist from South Asia, visiting the United States on an invitation from the State Dept with about a dozen others. We arrive in Washington D.C. at the height of the "Cherry Blossom Festival". Our tour guide is this really tall, extremely pretty, highly educated blonde that works with the company that the State Dept has hired to show us around Washington D.C. to introduce us to America.

I should be finishing my grad school application and writing sample. BUT, I need to write about Aziz Ansari. I'm getting tired of all the apologia, victim-blaming and using ambiguity to try and defend him from what he did. I will get flak for this, but I don't really care. The point where Ansari should have stopped was this: "When Ansari told her he was going to grab a condom within minutes of their first kiss, Grace voiced her hesitation explicitly. “I said something like, ‘Whoa, let’s relax for a sec, let’s chill.’”

This is it. SHE SAID NO!
