Just going to share some quotes in no particular order "In "Embodying Citizenship," Paul Filmer linked this process to the beginning of citizenship in the early modern period in Europe. He argues,

I started reading this thesis paper today that I found on google scholar if you want to read along with me! dspace.library.uvic.ca/handle/1828/22… I would EXTREMELY recommend this paper to anyone interested in talking about film so far? I'm only up to like page sixteen.

I put videos on in the background while I draw so that I don't have to pay attention to them, and I've got an old one from Lindsay Ellis on about the Wicked Witch of the West and it made me realize that we're probably going to have to talk about Miss Piggy at length soon. Because if ever there was a character that is ripe for discussion in fat studies, it is Miss Piggy.

Okay, the most telling thing to me about the trans student being locked out of both locker rooms during the shooter drill is: why would the locker rooms need to be gender segregated during a shooting? It's just such an obvious communication from the school to the student that there is no protection, no safety there.

I spent five bucks on a new (to me) textbook and I'm so excited to read it that I'm already searching for companion texts to go with it so I guess I should stop pretending I'm not the biggest nerd I know. I sometimes like to think not that I am cool but that I used to be and it's some sort of protective but looking back I think I was just drunk and I was still like this about books

I watched the new Doctor Who and it was definitely different. I felt like there were some tonal problems at the end but my experience with this show so far is mostly the classic series so I was kinda like "wow toothface guy is a pretty intense villain for this show" Overall I liked what it sets up and look forward to more episodes with this Doctor but this particular adventure felt a little off to me

This is a fascinating thread so far, I really recommend giving it a read and giving Mike a follow (she's amazing) Mike is actually one of my early teachers in how to recognize the ways we insist on the virtuous bodily transformation in media. I think her work on disfigurmisa (a term she coined btw!) is essential to understanding how the body is used as a sign in media representations.

...oh boy. This frighteningly ties into our discussion of the fascistic entitlement and obsession with the transformation of the national body so like

I don't know if I'm ever going to finish this fiction novel or this non-fiction novel and that's just the story of my life. Just stay the course. So if you know me, you know I like X-Men but my major complaint about it stemming from my childhood on (and a common complaint as I understand it) is that the bigots seem JUSTIFIED in hating the mutants because the mutants are dangerous.

Spare me the incurious who respond to a single tweet in a thread they haven't read with an unshakably confident egotism. I'm just tired. I think everyone will agree that this year has already been a grind through a lot of stressful misery.

I do want to talk about Cinderella a little more because a question has come up a few times that I think is interesting, which is what do I think about Cinderella's stepsisters cutting off parts of their feet (heel and toe respectively) to fit the slipper. So first, let's narrow down that plot element to an era!

If you're here for takes about nerd media you are going to be so disappointed when my tweets are 90% shitposts and textbooks Like seriously I don't talk about this shit much, first because I hate fandoms and second because most of my days are spent reading different things than that. I also experience JOMO and so I will rarely see a piece of nerd media when it's new.

This just made me realize Disney's animated Cinderella is another example of a virtuous physical transformation like Captain America except her's is clothes instead of muscles Cinderella's values are readable on her body in comparison to her step sisters. Her values don't trigger her transformation, her dead mom giving her a fairy godmother does that I think.

The weakest put down is the "you're overthinking" one because it's like... Yes. I am. I enjoy thought. ????? I never know how to respond to the weirdos who come at me all snide like "you're going to apply THEORY to FILM pshaw look at brainy over here thinkin about the big moving pictures" and I don't actually know what I could say to that because... Yes? That's what I'm doing?

See, to me, the idealized body in media is more than just a representation of our insecurities about our own bodies, but also a representation of our values. Steve Rogers is not Captain America until his body matches our idea of his character. Indeed, the physical transformation of Rogers to Captain America can be read as a kind of fascistic inspiration porn. The triumph of Steve Rogers' will allows him to transcend his weak, "defective" body and embody American imperialist values.

I fell asleep mid 1999 paper about Nazis and muscles so as you can imagine, my dreams were WEIRD. But holy shit y'all, there's some sentences in this thing that I think are going to DRIVE HOME MY POINT about Trump's Fictional Body.

Something I hear a LOT from people who tell me they have cognitive disabilities of some kind is that the thread essay format is so much more accessible for them, and I think there's real power there. Threads don't necessarily have to be short to be accessible, a lot of mine aren't at all, but the way the information is broken up into these chunks really does make it so much more, I don't know, graspable for some people who might have barriers to traditional essays

At some point I will do the definitive thread on Trump's Fictional Body that appears in memes and other propaganda that actually delves into the history of nazi entitlement to the national body, the myth of the superior heroic body, all that shit. I swear, someday, I will. "There's a lot going on here" does not even begin to come close to describing. I've done two pieces on this on medium and barely scratched the surface.

Another really good point! In a way, the immortality of the elves is expressed as an escape from corporeal embodiment, from fat and all its associations with the deathly, mortal aspects of the body. I'd point to Bordo's work on mind/body dualism here especially! (this is also why in a lot of media elves don't really age past middle adulthood unless the author needs to show they're close to elf death, whatever that means for the universe)

Someone just tried to argue there's a difference between suffragettes and suffragists and just... Wow. This is like saying there's a fundamental difference meant by "gang member" or "gangbanger", they mean the same thing just one derogates.

So Suffragettes and Fat! That's what you voted for! Before we start, I'm throwing this link to this other thread up because concepts we discuss in it are EXTREMELY RELEVANT to this conversation.
