The word Sankranti denotes a transit period and relates to the movement of Sun.
There are 12 Sankramanas in a Hindu Calendar year.
Sankramana is a compound word & the 2nd part of this word ‘kramana’ denotes coverage or movement. The Kanya Sankranti, which is observed yesterday day, Sept 17, Monday, refers to the movement of Sun from Leo or Sihma Rashi, to Virgo or Kanya Rashi.
In general, all Sankrantis are very auspicious to pay oblations or perform austerities.
