I wish conservation biologists would build their field using indigenous (to whatever area) knowledge.

It’s exhausting, as a Native scientist, to watch colonialist framings constantly set up unjust precedents and then subtly (or not) blame nonscientists for issues. That’s a lot I’m asking for because in order to do it nonextractively, (mostly white) folks who want to do their science in (mostly) not-their-backyard would have to really come to grips with the imperialist idea that parachuting in to study A Species isn’t privileged af.

Okay. Okay.

<taps mic>

Here's the thing. I am overjoyed, thrilled, and grateful to see what I am interpreting as the gates (the ones kept by science gatekeepers) being ajar and potentially open to indigenous knowledge. Simultaneously, I am furious that what it takes for me to discover this, is dressing up indigenous knowledge in language that is deemed 'sufficiently smart' by the academy.

CW anti-Islam

Let’s examine shall we the intense anti-Islam sentiment embedded in this smug liberal statement. Encoding “violent totalitarianism using theology as an excuse” as trademarkedly a property of Islam is a pretty great example of the pervasive antipathy towards other belief systems, that I was talking about in my initial tweet.

The reply was especially disquieting because, well

An attorney in Tennessee and has been cc-ing me on emails thinking I was his wife (we have similar names), for the last 18 months.

They have progressed to calling me.

I’ve tried calling them to explain. I’ve tried emailing. This guy does not give up.

I am unhappy about this. I may have typos in my tweets but I know my partner’s email.

Today I called his business associates to ask if they could remove me from THEIR lists.

They were like “oh...well....his wife’s name is Katherine Crocker”

That’s fair.

But also?

Hi for everyone who knows me as a scientist—I have scaled back pretty intensely on my countertrolling.

Occasionally I will do it though. Part of this is pedagogy, believe it or not.

This is a thread about countertrolling as educational justice praxis. I have a few jobs. One is to do & communicate really good science: I do that with most of my time. Probably about 50% of my waking hours total are spent on science thought/communicating it.

This is my duty to my supervisors, my colleagues, and especially my funders (taxpayers)

Excuse me, are you honestly trying to equate informal language use with literacy, while implying that natural linguistic evolution constitutes lexicide?

Trash, we gonna go to school. FIRST OF ALL you got a helluva nerve sashaying in here to try to shame people for expressing their complex lived experiences with code switching.

NEXT let’s deconstruct shall we the absolute bullshit construct of [your version of] “literacy” as a valid proxy for humanity.

Okay fellow ableds.

Many of us didn’t realize straws are crucial to accessing food and beverages for some people.

That excuses the first idk 5 SECONDS of this straw deal.

After that? Should’ve been ok great so how about ~actually frivolous~ single use plastics.

JUST STOP. People don’t owe you a categorical justification of why don’t they but why not and how come...

Clean your house first: how many to-go coffee lids (and those weird plug-stirrers) do you use? Do you bring your own grocery bags? EVERY time?

How about kombucha caps?

I find this profoundly disquieting, and I’m not 100% sure why, but I think it has to do with how she valorizes oppression rather than strikes out at its existence.

The idea that oppression is freedom is ~exactly~ why white women like The Handmaid’s Tale. My white skin disgusts me. My passport disgusts me. They are the marks of an insufferable privilege bought at the price of others’ agony. If I could peel myself inside out I would be glad. If I could become part of the oppressed I would be free<br />
<br />
Quote attributed to Robin Morgan, a radical feminist of the American Women’s Movement The idea that a secret bonus of oppression is that “at least you don’t have to acknowledge your privilege anymore” (because that’s rough and takes heavy emotional lifting, I agree) ... is so very deeply rooted in having a metric crapton of privilege.

There's a lot of commotion around the idea that "what would you have done" if instead of being a white US citizen in 2018, you were a German citizen in 1930-45.

I think it's better to reframe this into something that doesn't involve hypotheticals. Instead of talking about what would we do or would have done back then, or ~if~ we had been there.

Let's reframe it onto what we know we have done. Or, even more constructively, what we didn't do that, perhaps, we deeply wish we had.

Hi I’m an expert in biology and also Native and claimed by my tribe, and you’re completely wrong. Okay here’s the thing: identity isn’t ancestry, and DNA tests do less than you think.

The purveyors of DNA tests want you to think that, like. They put every single primary unit of DNA through a bunch of fancy sieves, and then report highly specific results to you.

Back from hiatus briefly to note that white cis men are frighteningly entitled in what they believe femme coded people owe them.

This is a thread about what just happened and I’m still shaking. This is the current seat availability in a car (and it was 15 minutes before the train departed, and I am in the rear car, so more seats are available in every other car)

Briefly breaking hiatus because I've been noticing a really dangerous reframing of the world. It's been coming at me from several entirely independent directions, and so I think it's worth mentioning.

Let me start by saying, I believe that compassion is the way forward. If you check out my big threads (some of which are in my profile as moments) you'll notice that pretty much every time, I come back to the idea that regardless of our personal feelings, we need to consider the feelings of other humans, if we want to make any kind of progress.

Playing the “pick on women with fewer followers so you can pretend to be clever and mighty” game again Jon?

You’re just a coward, plain and simple. Jon’s game is “ooooh I hate callout culture, and I realize I fight it by doing it, but the difference is that ~I~ I like y’all trash FNMI and allies, actually engage”.

Please note this is factually incorrect (that’s the Canadian spelling for Fake News).

“How did this happen, how did DJT get elected?”

The answer is racism.

“But if that’s the answer then HOW did it happen? Someone should write a book!”

No book needed. It’s racism. And the handwringing about needing a book is racism too. Racism: white voters chose DJT in spite of his open racism

Racism: voting districts are stacked against poor and IBPOC

Racism: the democrats do exactly as little as possible to help IBPOC while still being able to be the “lesser of two evils”

Hi new followers. I poking my head in from a couple weeks’ semi-hiatus to say hello and tell/remind folks what they can expect from me.

I am here to dismantle settler colonialism. I am here to push against the general idea that Natives are irrelevant to the lives of nonNatives. I am here to support Native youth. I am here to challenge the zeitgeist that prevents IBPOC and especially IB women, trans, non binary, agender and queer folks from accessing education, opportunity, and healthcare.

Wow, folks.

This is a great two-tweet thread about white fragility.

- Twitter is upsetting
- because I got called out for being problematically mid-key racist
- Just because I was racist that once doesn't mean I'm always racist
- People need to stop with the identity politics. But it's worth addressing, because this is kind of a bent-out-of-shape truth that (if she hasn't blocked me) I think @drcm_cash might draw some comfort from.

It's true that bigotry is not who we are unless we actively try to make it that way (eg Nazis).
