Would someone please point out to both these people that the main difference between Denmark and Venezuela is that one is historically a coloniser and the other colonised? Literally the only reason Denmark gets to do these things is that it's at the top of a global imperial-colonial system and profits from the exploitation of those at the bottom.

#AcWri #PhDchat Fancy some lunch break fun?

I am the very model of a young post-doc precarious:
I have a PhD and my accomplishments are various.
I've publications numerous, a contract for a monograph;
Today's writing output has been a single tortured paragraph. I fill out applications for jobs temp'rary and permanent:
Will your first-rate department be my unemployment's terminant?
I do impact, outreach, I am a public intellectual,
My tweets and rants and diatribes are passionate, effectual.

My lovely Patreon supporters should now have my August newsletter in their inboxes. And the July newsletter is now public. Check it out: patreon.com/posts/july-new… On that note, I have a new Patreon goal to help me fund a pet project I've wanted to run for a little while.

In case you're wondering, I'm absolutely making the chancellor say the full title of my thesis at my graduation. I don't have a Soundcloud but I do have a Patreon which helps me take this work further and turn it into genuine social change. patreon.com/elmyra

I really hope every single corporation that marched in #LondonPride2018 today will demand that the organisers explain why their trans staff were made to march behind an anti-trans hate group. #justsayin' If you are part of an LGBT employee group at any of these companies, ask your employer to take this up with #PrideInLondon .

Alright, slightly sub-tweety thread partly because I don't want to pile on the person in question, but seriously, we're taking self-care and activism tips from ex-CIA analysts now? I'm gonna pick up on two things they said in particular. Their first tip is to "take action", and as examples of that they name "volunteer for a food pantry, canvass for a political candidate, donate to an NGO, visit a sick friend".

Hey so who's been watching the winter Olympics and wants me to talk about docile, socially constructed bodies and why no women figure skaters do quad jumps, and women snowboarders only get 3m of amplitude on the half pipe while the men get 5m? Cos in gonna, in a bit. Alright, let's do this. Here's a lovely introduction to the postmodernists from @existentialcoms: existentialcomics.com/comic/224

One of the big ideas in postmodern thought is the everything is socially constructed. Which is something a lot of people struggle with.

Small aside: this badge is designed to be attached to clothes typically worn by men (specifically: shirt with a breast pocket). On anything else, it ends up looking awkward, falling off, or being covered up. Just a small but impactful way academia can be sexist. Other small aside: Apparently people who go to conferences on positionality in qualitative research are predominantly (and I mean 80-90%!) women or femme-presenting. Make of that what you will.

[rape/sexual violence] Ok folks, I'm going to try and do a thread on why the "women should just say no more clearly/differently" argument is bullshit.

With academic references and everything. Because I (nearly) have a PhD in consent. Here's a paper that it took me a very long time to understand:

Kitzinger, C., & Frith, H. (1999). Just say no? The use of conversation analysis in developing a feminist perspective on sexual refusal. Discourse & Society, 10(3), 293-316.
