The name given to China's Westernmost province is "Xinjiang" and means "New Frontier."
The region has a long history at the periphery of Chinese Empire, but has only rarely been controlled from the East.
Split in two by the Tian Shan Mountain Range it contains two great arid basins, the Tarim and Jungarr.
It borders Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
