Yesterday was the 45th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. Four girls were murdered: Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, & Carol McNair.

McNair was 11; the others were 14. The FBI identified Thomas Blanton, Herman Cash, Robert Chambliss, and Bobby Cherry as the perpetrators, but they weren't tried for years and Cash died without having been charged. (For his part, Chambliss blamed Gary Rowe, an FBI informant.)

sudden realization: there is an ADL or SPLC intern whose job is just keeping track of which white nationalists guest on which other white nationalists' podcasts

Jesus, that poor bastard Oh hey that joke sounds like as good an excuse as any for an actualfa update

For new readers: "actualfa" is the term I use to distinguish people who get called fascist but are not from those who are actually uh

I expected cool stuff at Skirball’s Jim Henson exhibit but was NOT prepared for the ballroom costumes from LABYRINTH The Jareth and Sarah ballroom clothes were on mannequins in a glass case facing each other, on a turntable so they waltzed round and round

Putting on THE TWO JAKES, the sequel to CHINATOWN.

Yeah, there was a sequel to CHINATOWN.

By Robert Towne.

Jack Nicholson directed. Think the Nicholson-directed THE TWO JAKES couldn't be any more of a vanity project? Jack was originally to square off against Robert Evans.

A pleasure to head to Hollywood for the unveiling of Weird Al Yankovic’s star on the Walk of Fame today. The great Dr. Demento was on hand to speak, as was only proper. The second introductory speaker surprised me: Thomas Lennon, best known for playing Lt. Dangle on RENO 911, who shared a delightful story about how he and Al met.

My favorite thing about the ‘80s cop show HUNTER is how every time Hunter uses an alias it’s “Richard MacPherson”

even after he burns it Hunter travels to a foreign country under the name “Richard MacPherson,” kills the son of a dictator, barely escapes

KEEPS USING THE ALIAS

Alex Jones's deplatforming is going to be an interesting structure test, bc Jones is in a very different place from (say) the Daily Stormer. The actualfa have gotten pretty badly manhandled by deplatforming, because there are few of them and they are generally incompetent.

This is usually a complaint I hear Righties make about Lefties, not the other way round.
When Righties make that complaint, though, it's different: they want to know a defined point at which Leftist cultural demands will stop.

This is a very sad story, but also holy hell is there the seed of a fictional story in it:
nytimes.com/2018/07/28/the… Broadway actor has a small understudy part. His contract pays him six figures to be available as long as he checks in to see if he's needed.

I caught ANT-MAN AND THE WASP and also rewatched MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION, and it made me realize

a) MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION has a lot of colons
b) the ANT-MAN movies need better capers Marvel has pretty clearly decided. "Right, the ANT-MAN movies are the ones we're saving money on." I expect Act 3 to have the big stuff, but ANT-MAN AND THE WASP was crazily back-loaded and lacking in caperness. It did have bits of charm.

this is the difference between a) information and b) information with supporting structures
first off, let's just note something: it took over a year for the identity of the dude behind Sleeping Giants to come out, despite the fact that among his targets were entities claiming to be news outlets

that's just embarrassing, y'all

Reminder to @WSJ and @Variety: studios are bidding in full awareness that Lin-Manuel Miranda supports terrorism and murder.

He gave Oscar Lopez Rivera, whose FALN murdered five New Yorkers, a free ticket to HAMILTON.

And accompanied him, as his date.
chicagotribune.com/news/chicagoin… Maybe that's why the rights to that footage are up for bidding now: Miranda has done something that's much, much worse than tweets in bad taste. He has championed specific homicides and he damn well knows it.

And so do all of his fans in the press corps. Like @jaketapper.

til that the commies in the DSA have a term of opprobrium for commies who want to run candidates for office and think DSA should focus on doing this

that term is "electoralist" (yes, the people who came up with the whole DSA entryism idea are going to try to take over the Dems, but there are commies who are still very against elections at all

...and they're joining the DSA, apparently)

Hey, @YAF: if you want to maximize the effect, don't have people do this one-by-one and tell you about it. Get alumni to work their personal networks, build groups of people who pledge regularly, and have them drop donations as a bloc.
Once you have a nice big bloc, split it up into appropriately-sized sub-blocs. Drop the university a letter: "Unless the university makes substantial changes, we are prepared to start cancelling pledged donations, and send out press releases detailing exactly why we’re doing it."

As the #Aquaman trailer debuts, can we take a minute to appreciate the superhuman patience of Jason Momoa?

The dude's last five years must have felt *glacial.* Momoa must have felt great in 2010: he got cast in CONAN (2011) and the first season of GAME OF THRONES...

but CONAN didn't work and he was promptly killed off in GoT, and then he did a bunch of forgettable stuff

So here's a note on James Gunn's firing that people should take note of: it is unique and it is not reproducible.

Disemployment is only a viable weapon if it is not unique and it is reproducible. Lefty disemployment works because Lefties can do it all the time, because they have structures that can be mobilized for pressure.

Righties don't have those. Though Cernovich was able to get lots of people tweeting about it, Gunn got canned bc topic was uniquely bad for Disney.

The trailer for DC Comics's streaming show TITANS has dropped and holy crow is this embarrassing.
There are a few things that strike me about the trailer for DC Comics' TITANS. The biggest: for a professional production, it looks and feels remarkably like a fan film.

You know, the stuff comics fans got excited about *before they had actual product to get excited about.*

hey WB, let me save you some time

you know how the Spider-Man movies have been desperately fighting for years against the fact that their hero theme needs to be the '60s cartoon theme?

the instrumental of this is your hero theme; just accept it now
right now the only DC superhero who has a memorable movie hero theme is Wonder Woman

admittedly, it's a freaky wail that ain't exactly hummable, but at least you know who's coming around the corner

OBTW: the ACTUAL reason Shapiro, Milo, and Spencer, as different as they are, make campus tours:

a) William F. Buckley did it
b) the modern campus lecture circuit = $$ and, face it, going from college town to college town giving a stump speech to crowds of young people who look at you as if you're someone who's impressive is a PRETTY GOOD WAY TO LIVE, FOLKS

I've thought several times that Trump had some obvious Achilles heel as a politician and I've been wrong every single time

but FWIW, for now I think his Achilles heel is that he lacks a "grave concerns" setting and only has a "no big deal" or "this is bullshit" setting No politician ever actually has grave concerns, they just say they do as a fig leaf to voters who do have grave concerns and just want to be sure their guy is in the right place, concern-wise
