When we say “women,” please clarify that this means *straight cis white women*.
Gay/trans women / women of color have smelled the GOP mess for decades and they’ve voted in suit. If it’s somehow new to straight cis white women, that’s part of the problem.

White women have voted essentially 50-50 Republican/Democrat in presidential races since 1952. Only the 1964 Johnson/Goldwater race is a substantial outlier. 52% voted for Trump in 2016—against an outrageously qualified white woman. That’s just in line with long term trends.

#CrazyRichAsians is headed for a monster opening, and it’s essential to look at why. A full 38% of viewers so far have been Asian—we’re COMING OUT for this film as we never have in cinematic history.
But another 24% of viewers are black or Hispanic: *viewers are 62% nonwhite*.
The book #CrazyRichAsians was based on was a NYT bestseller. When the target for the book is described by folks in publishing, they say “white female, summer read, book club, 35-54.” That audience isn’t who’s filling theaters—yet.
They’re the ones who might take this to $100M.

1. No one‘s saying it but while #BladeRunner2049 is beautiful, interesting & richly realized, the reasons it is failing are abundantly clear
2. First, it’s hugely self-indulgent. As an iconic white male director, Ridley Scott‘s convinced his work is CANONICAL for today’s audiences
