I have a long rant about this. Conferences are highly valuable for many reasons. But being able to extract that value is sometimes difficult and no one teaches you how to do it. Conference talks aren't education. They don't pinpoint the information you need. They are valuable because they tell you what is out there and how other people are thinking about similar problems. The question is whether you recognize the similarities to your own work.

With McCain's passing, we're being shown how easy it is for white men to get away with a life of destruction. White people all along the spectrum are ready to forget everything McCain ever did. And consequently, when another one shows up, they'll say were overreacting. When Trump is unseated, his president will be treated as a curious anomaly rather than the original sins of this country coming home to roost.

Whiteness cannot be condemned. That's part of the package deal.

I don't like the aspect of this where people are taking it upon themselves to diagnose mental illness.

However, it's also not lost on me that many people who interact with the President of the United States come away seriously worried about his volatility I've talked a lot about uncovering my biggest blind spot since Trump became a serious candidate. It's not that he couldn't get a large contingent of white people to vote for him. It was more that I thought "checks and balances" would actually remove him.

Okay so I see things are popping off with Amy Siskind today. I've been reserving judgment and waiting for more information. But let me give a few thoughts. First, some accountability for me. I've been following Amy. Mostly because I could see she had tapped into an important part of the movement against Trump.

Today I unfollowed her. Because it's now clear that she's still using white woman politics. And we can't abide that anymore

This is why attacking us through propaganda and voting fraud is insidious. People watched towers fall and the fact that it was an attack wasn't up for debate. Now we're asking ppl to accept that our most taken for granted institutions are compromised. It's different. It's akin to the reaction white people are having when we tell them the police aren't entirely trustworthy. Before they even engage with the harm done, the change of frame is inherently threatening. They don't know what to do without an infallible protective institution.

I haven't talked about this shake up much. But I hope y'all are paying attention - Jack Dorsey just blew up Twitter's company structure to prepare it for the next decade Just a few things here. This is at the same time we know that Jack is sitting down with the Trump administration and trying to figure out how to make them happy.…

Getting white men fired from their job is probably the most effective way to have an impact on the opposition and bring the Overton window back from the brink. White men getting and keeping the best jobs is at the center of this whole thing. It's part of the contract. A lot of the privilege that white men receive is funneled through their job. Many forms of oppression run through employment (or lack there of).

Can we stop doing this snarky sarcastic shit while the president is leading us towards authoritarianism and war. You're a fucking Senator. Call it what it is. Then fix it. I understand that most of the time politics is just talking shit and jockeying for position. The point of politics is to have another option besides open conflicts where people die. You have one job @SenSanders. Prevent these conflicts.

So many white dudes who define themselves by their identity as a programmer are so mad about this GitHub as resume thing. Like so mad. Like I've been watching since yesterday as they spend hours of time and energy and words arguing to preserve their Temple and rituals and credentials. Making specious arguments, giving benefit of the doubt to biases left and right.

I see a lot of men in their feels over this latest example of toxic masculinity. Specifically, men really want someone to acknowledge how rough it is to be rejected by women. Let’s talk about it a little. A while back I wrote an extensive thread about this in the context of street harassment. It’s important to accept this fact. EVERYBODY understands how men take rejection. It’s not a mystery.

If you find yourself typing this or something similar, instead consider whether you put your foot in your mouth and you should apologize. Let's talk about why this is problematic and what more nuanced guidance might look like. I have time on this Muni train.

Time to talk about #InfinityWar. I'll keep the hashtag in all tweets. #InfinityWar is the culmination of 10 years of building a whole connected universe of movies. It is an incredible feat. And all of that was to make it even more devastating to watch it all collapse.

I read this and at that exact moment realized something. I'm tired of white dude journalists telling me what to admire about the white dudes who are destroying everything. It's fucking gross watching white men find that common ground that let's us know they understand each other. Even the most egregious perpetrators get that knowing nod from other white men.

Yeah I've seen a few of these dust-ups. It's hard to navigate between acknowledging generational gaps while avoiding treading into ageism. I don't have answers. I'll say this. I don't think it's ageism to ask people to own the mindset of their generation. In the same way we know it's not racism to ask white people to acknowledge everything that comes with Whiteness.

Okay for real. I’m all for debates about open source. But we have to start acknowledging that part of why it’s impactful *is because it’s free*. Most OSS has no (economic) worth until many ppl use it to create *something else* valuable. If you built that same thing and tried to charge ppl initially, it wouldn’t work.
