1/ You know that 49 people were killed in the shooting at Pulse nightclub.

What you don’t know: Even though police asked the Orlando Fire Dept. to come in and help get victims to safety and hospitals, paramedics stayed outside the club.

For hours.

propub.li/2Q4FOLG 2/ Why didn’t those first responders enter quicker?

They didn’t have a plan.

They didn’t have the right training.

And their attempts to prepare got lost in bureaucracy, even though they’d been working on a plan for a situation like Pulse for years.

1/ This year we’re looking at how the government controls flooding along rivers.

For 100+ years, the Army Corps of Engineers built levees to keep water out of communities and farms. Here's how that works — and how it can make flooding worse:

propub.li/2CuL3lY 2/ Then we looked at how it works in the real world, when the Corps has to decide who gets protected and who gets left behind.

1/ In Dec 2016, Det. Jessica LaBorde interrogated 12-y-o Bobby Lewis alone in the police station in Ville Platte, LA. Bobby said he wasn’t involved in any of those crimes. bit.ly/2wg9deE

1/ Alexis Winston’s window didn’t lock and needed a security screen. She complained to the East St. Louis, Ill., public housing authority.

No fix.

She was found dead in her apt, window shattered by an intruder. This happened one year ago yesterday.
propub.li/2vy23lv 2/ @HUDgov took over the East St. Louis housing authority in 1985 because of poor living conditions and fraud. HUD was supposed to protect the residents of public housing.

They were neglected instead.

1/ Can a levee protect one town while making flooding worse for others?

The answer is known to scientists and supported by basic physics, but we wanted to see it for ourselves. So, instead of waiting for a flood, we built a model river valley & flooded it propub.li/2M9uNKJ 2/ Along with @reveal, we hired engineers at @saflumn to build a physical model of four levee scenarios to see how construction choices can put surrounding communities at greater risk of flooding. (The houses were carved by the dads of a few @ProPublica reporters.)

1/ For years, Kris Kobach, a lawyer and now a candidate for Kansas gov., was hired to defend anti-immigration ordinances for small towns.

But here’s the thing: millions of dollars later, none of the towns are currently enforcing any of those laws. propub.li/2KnE8d8 2/ A former mayor characterized Kobach’s attitude as,“Let’s find a town that’s got some issues or pretends to have some issues, let’s drum up an immigration problem and maybe I can advance my political position, my political thinking and maybe make some money at the same time.”

1/ Two men in Indiana went to prison on poor police work and shaky evidence.

When the case started to unravel, officials doubled down.

Both sides would ultimately make their case to Mike Pence, now @VP, the Indiana governor running for vice president.

propub.li/2Ahnex0 2/ On Oct. 29, 1996, 17-year-old Michael Kershner was shot and nearly killed.
