I'm not convinced, though. Sir Ivan Rogers' narrow economic arguments aren't touching on the reasons why so many of us - perhaps a minority, but if so a very large minority - want to remain.
Sir Ivan doesn't examine his basic assumption - that the one and only red line that must be followed, come what may, is to end freedom of movement of people.

A political mandate is written on water. It exists only because we believe it exists. Only if enough of us believe it. Once enough of us stop believing in it, it's gone. Ceases to exist.
Look at the 5-year parliament rule. A snap general election was generally agreed to be impossible - until, suddenly, it wasn't. The brexit mandate is like this. One day it will just be - gone.
