Thanks @grollman for calling out the hypocrisy of sociologists who turn a blind eye to sexual misconduct in our institutions. UW-Madison can learn a lot from #MeTooPhD. Unfortunately that change is coming slower than I would like. egrollman.com/2018/08/03/met…
I spent more hours than I would like explaining to male faculty members why the “whisper network” exists, and how it’s more than just “rumors.” Many sociologists, including some of our faculty, study informal institutions that emerge when trust in formal institutions breaks down.
When you have a department that has victim-blamed, protected abusers, and turned a blind eye to the pain and trauma of members for DECADES, who thinks that the benefits of reporting outweigh the costs? But staying silent isn’t an option either if it means others could be hurt.

With #ASA18 fast-approaching, I thought I’d share some tips for writing, designing, and presenting an effective conference talk. (thread) #AcademicTwitter
1. Conference talks are typically 10-15 minutes long. I’d suggest breaking that down as follows:
- background/justification (2 min)
- research goals/questions (1 min)
- study design/methods (2 min)
- overview (1 min)
- findings (5-7 min)
- discussion/implications (1-2 min)
2. Keep the focus on your paper. Save the bulk of the time for your study and what you find. People aren’t coming to hear about what’s been done before. They’re coming to hear what’s new.
(Though, if your talk is at 8am, don't take it personally if no one comes at all)

Sociologists! My semester is over which means it's time for me to start offering daily #asa18 #asa2018 tips for Philly food and drink and general awesomeness. What do you want to know? @ASAnews
Day 1: if u need a cheesesteak, don't go to a tourist trap for a cheesesteak. Head further south past cheesesteak vegas to @mikesbbq_215 for a smoked brisket cheesesteak. Or go in the other direction to @StockyardPhilly. Or a roast pork from @TommyDinics at reading terminal.
Day 2: let's get fancier than cheesesteaks. Plan soon/now about scoring a weekend reservation at Philly's best classy establishments: @vernickphilly, @LaurelEPX, @townsendphilly, @zahavrestaurant (get the lamb mesibah), @vetricucinaphl or @vedgerestaurant
