A major difference bt conservatives & the rest of us is that conservatives, for some reason, prioritize hypothetical violence above actual violence.

E.g. A woman MIGHT be assaulted in a bathroom > forcing #trans ppl to use the wrong bathroom actually IS dangerous for trans ppl
Militarized police are justified and necessary, because cops MIGHT get hurt during an occasionally dangerous job they agreed & are paid to do > people of color actually, currently being killed by cops
A not-yet-baby MIGHT experience SOME primal form of pain for a moment > Rates of death during childbirth are higher when women don't have access to legal abortion

Thanks to @RepTedDeutch who has been doing great work in calling attention to the need for common sense #gun measures that Congress should adopt usatoday.com/story/news/pol…
.@RepTedDeutch told me that the dad of @Emma4Change wanted to speak to me because @SteveKing and others are wrongly interpreting why she wore a Cuban flag on her jacket during #MarchForOurLives rally
I spoke to Jose Gonzalez who explained that @Emma4Change is proud of her dad and abuela’s #Cuban heritage and in no way was it a sign of support for the #Castro dictatorship

My take on the new #omnibus bill, as it relates to #gunviolence:
1) The fixes to NICS (the background check system) are long overdue. I hope that they will be implemented well. theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
2) I am glad that Congress clarified what CDC, NIH, and NIJ have long known: the "Dickey amendment" doesn't ban research per se. (Cf this article I wrote with @EmmyBetz & Wintemute 2 years ago: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…)
3) HOWEVER: this clarification does **nothing** to fix the lack of research. We need appropriations. Want to know more about why this clarification is meaningless (and may even be harmful)? Read here: npr.org/sections/healt…

Over the past 2 days, hundreds of doctors have shared heartbreaking accounts of how #gunviolence is a #publichealth issue. These are the stories of #docs4gunsense ... May their words make a difference.

The result of a bullet ricocheting inside the skull and destroying the brain on CT scan. The worst trauma I have seen. GUNS ARE A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE – Gen Geller MD, NY #docs4gunsense @drgenngeller
The damage a bullet does to a 1 year old brain as it ricochets back and for. The guilt the family feels. The sadness we all feel.

The @NRA & #gun companies are not evil but they are part of the problem. And the amazing thing is: all the folks clamoring to #BoycottNRA don't even know how bad it really is!
5 things the #NRA & gun manufacturers have successfully lobbied to create...
1) Background chk system overseen by the ATF that is forbidden to digitize records & so must keep all records on paper
2) BG chk system that is enormously hobbled at ATF bec of extreme funding shortages so that it can't do its job well & so that the NRA can claim it doesn't work
3) Passage of the #Dickey Amendment that forbids gov't research from reaching conclusions that might be construed as advocating for gun control, thus allowing the #NRA to say, "No studies show..." and leaving legislators with no data to back up laws that might work
