Back to school and feeling both exhausted and energized! So many good conversations yesterday and today around curriculum, diversity, and equity. Proud to be a part of such a great group of Ts as we #DisruptTexts together! Can’t wait to meet the kids Monday!
To my Ts friends here, thank you all for your support of not only this work, but for your daily brilliance. My #HFellows #squad... don’t know where I’d be without you. ❤️ @TchKimPossible @arcticisleteach @tianasilvas @AnnaOz249
Feeling especially grateful to @ChristieNold @ValeriaBrownEdu @mrsjjee @juliaerin80 @thel0rdbyr0n @SchleiderJustin @mel_katzz @DingleTeach I am continuously inspired by your honesty, courage, and deep thinking. Words aren’t enough but maybe this will help...

One of the things I commonly hear Ts say about our work as educators is that we need to prepare kids for college or the world (hopefully both).

I’ve said that myself, so I’d like to unpack that a little. A thread... 1/ #DisruptTexts
Preparing kids for college and/or the world is a line of reasoning I’ve often heard used to justify practices that Ts believe will help kids succeed.

We need to give homework, tests, exams b/c that’s how they’ll be measured. 2/
Or that Ss will need to know X, Y, or Z b/c that’s what college professors expect.

In the ELA world, this line of reasoning justifies teaching everything from the 5-paragraph essay to isolated grammar practice to reading Shakespeare. 3/

A thought experiment: think about all the books you've ever read — for academic purposes or in your personal life, from the pictures books read to you to the books you read now. How long would it take to read enough books by POC to match the number of White authors you've read?
As a POC, AAPI, Filipina American, I have always looked for mirrors in books, anywhere and everywhere. Spring Moon by Bette Bao Lord and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan were important books for me as a teen—and I am not Chinese or Chinese American. But they still resonated with me.
As an English major in college, I took every multicultural literature class offered. When I read WEB DuBois's concept of 'double-consciousness' everything clicked. I knew what he was meant. I continued to read as much as I could by authors from marginalized communities.

Fam, if you don't know @EllinKeene you need to fix that immediately. She can't be described in a tweet, but knowing of her, then being taught and nurtured by her today in my budding practice as an educational researcher has been one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
My #hfellows journey is just beginning, but it is no exaggeration or stretch of the imagination when I say that I feel so empowered and ready to engage in all that is ahead because I know she's in my corner.
I have made a commitment to myself and to my people that this journey will not only carry my story forward, but it will be the story of my children, of my school, of Montbello, of Denver, of us all as we journey into a new era of collective liberation.

What is smart? Smart is learnable. Smart is learning HOW to think. @holliswscott’s action research is on creating cultures of thinking in our classrooms #HFellows
Love how versatile and flexible the See-Think-Wonder thinking routine can be... and how it can also help Ss uncover their own biases as they respond. #Hfellows @holliswscott
Such a simple routine but such deep thinking can emerge from Color-Symbol-Image. Love this routine for pushing Ss to metaphorical thinking. #Hfellows @holliswscott

For his action research, @CHallTeacher took on the problem of practice: “I like it the way it is.” In other words, how can we create a culture of revision in our writing classrooms? #HFellows
Kids revise when they see the value in it... what are we doing as teachers to shift the value of revision to Ss v impose it on them as Ts? @CHallTeacher quotes Johnston: “Language creates writing identities.” #HFellows
When we keep writing authentic, by allowing students to do real-world tasks for real-world audiences, and including choice at every step, Ss are much more invested in the revision process and open to change. Love the way @CHallTeacherempowers his kids. #Hfellows
