Today is the Jayanti of Madame Bhikaji Cama, who designed one of our early national flags, unfurled it on foreign soil, revolutionary, close associate of Veer Savarkar, one of the most courageous Indian women. 
Bhikaji Cama was born on September 24, 1861 into a well to do, Paris family in Mumbai. Her father Sorabji Patel, was one of the city's leading merchants, also an educationist. She was drawn into the nationalist movement from a very early age.
At the age of 24, Bhikaji Cama married Rustomji, a well known lawyer in Mumbai's elite circle. However her husband's pro British, Anglophile sympathies, clashed with her own nationalist feelings, and their marriage was quite a troubled, unhappy one.
Happy #EngineersDay celebrated in honor of Shri Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, whose Jayanti it is today. And Google Doodle today in his honor. One of the builders of modern India, an engineering genius, and one of the greatest Indians of modern era.
Mokshagundam Visweswarayya, founder of the modern Mysore State. Every where you go in that region, you can find his legacy, be it the mighty Krishna Raja Sagar Dam or institutions like State Bank of Mysore or the Bhadravati Steel Factory.
Vishwesarayya was born in Mudenahalli, now located in Chikballapur district on Sept 15,1861 to Srinivasa Sastry and Venkachamma. His father was a well known Sanskrit scholar, from whom he learnt to respect the culture and traditions of Bharat.
Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Saragarhi, one of the greatest last man standing actions in military history, when 21 Sikhs held of 10,000 Afghans against all odds, going down to the last man. A tale of sacrifice, honor and courage. #LestWeForget
To understand the significance of Saragarhi, one needs to take a look at the backdrop. The Afridi tribe had a deal with the British to protect the strategically important Khyber Pass for 16 years, who in turn created a local regiment composed of the Afridis entirely.
However the Afridi tribesmen, turned against the British, and began to capture all the outposts in the Khyber, espeically on the Samana Range near Peshawar. Saragarhi was one of the posts, here, manned by the Sikhs. The British started the Tirah campaing in response.
Today is the Jayanti of V.O.Chidambaram Pillai, freedom fighter, who started India's first ever shipping service. While we celebrate today in honor of Dr.S.Radhakrishnan, not many know about VOC Pillai, except in TN. A truly selfless patriot, who gave his all.
Also called as Kapalottiya Tamizhan( The Tamil Helsman), one of the foremost freedom fighters of Tamil Nadu, V.O.Chidambaram Pillai, was also a sucessful entrepreneur, who challenged the British monopoly in shipping sector, and paid a rather heavy price for it too.
VOC Pillai, was born in Ottapidaram, a small town in Thoothukodi district of TN, the legendary Veera Pandya Kattabomman's fort too is located nearby just 3 km away at Panchalankurichi. His parents were Olaganerohathan Pillai and Paramayee Annal.
Today is the Jayanti of Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, freedom fighter, first Chief Minister of newly created Andhra state, known as Andhra Kesari for his open defiance against the British rule, a towering personality.
Prakasam Pantulu was born in a small village, Vinodarayanipalem, in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh,to a pious Niyogi Brahmin couple, Subamma and Gopala Krishnayya on August 23, 1872.
His father was a Karanam of the village, and since his ancestors hailed from Tanguturu, a small town in Prakasam district, that became their surname. His father however passed away when Prakasam was just 11, leaving the family burden on his mother’s shoulders.
Today is the Jayanti of Baji Rao 1, one of the greatest Hindu warriors ever, the man who expanded the Maratha Empire all the way to Delhi and beyond, rated as one of the finest generals in history, and established the Hindu Pad Padshahi.

Technically speaking Peshwa was equivalent to the Prime Minister in the Maratha Empire, starting out as subordinates to the Chattrapati, in later years they became the actual ruling power, starting with Balaji Vishwanath, Baji Rao's father.
Today is the Punya Thithi of Madan Lal Dhingra, one of the unsung revolutionaries, close associate of Veer Savarkar, hanged on this date in 1909 for his assasination of Curzon Wylie. One of the truly great sons of Bharat who needs to be known more.
Madan Lal Dhingra hailed from Amritsar, the 6th child of his family. His father was the city's Civil Surgeon,two of his brothers were doctors, while two other were barristers.
Coming from a well to do and influential family, Dhingra, could have settled into a life of luxury and comfort. Yet he was restless, driven by the call for Swadeshi, right from his student days at the Government College, Lahore in 1904.
Today is the Punya Thithi of Dr. Yellapragada Subbarao, a genius not many would be aware of really. But his contribution to field of medicine, would rank right up with likes of Alexander Fleming, Ronald Ross, and one who really deserved a Nobel.
Dr Subbarow made some of the most significant discoveries in the field of medicine, yet forget about ordinary people, even in the scientific community, his name is not too well known. And that is sad, considering his contribution has been no less than other stalwarts.

#TodayInHistory Pakistan begins Operation Gibraltar, that involved settling large number of infiltrators in the Kashmir valley and fomenting a large scale insurgency against the Indian state in 1965. In a way this was the start of the '65 war too.
Operation Gibraltar was first found out by Gujjar lad Mohammed Din, who was tending to his flock of cattle and approached by 2 strange looking men on Aug 5, 1965. They offered money for information on the deployment of Indian troops.
.The boy immediately reported the matter to the local police station at Tanmarg, following which an Army patrol was despatched and seven infiltrators were killed. There was a similar encounter at Galuthi in the Mendhar sector.
Today is the Jayanti of Sadashiv Rao Bhau, commander of Maratha forces at the Battle of Panipat, often judged harshly by historians for his failure there . But one who played a major role in the expansion of the Maratha empire, a great warrior, but a poor strategist.
Much like the other Maratha hero, Sambhaji, Bhau is quite often judged harshly by historians, for his failure at Panipat. And with good reason, while a brilliant warrior, he was an absolutely poor strategist, and not really suited to handle the political dynamics.
But it was under Bhau, that the Maratha Empire expanded further, as he consolidated on the gains of Baji Rao 1’s conquests, and the same with the Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao, who actually built up Pune, took the empire to it’s zenith. Sadly both would be remembered for Panipat.
Today is the Jayanti of Alluri Sitarama Raju, one of the great revolutionaries, who led a tribal uprising against the British in the Agency or Manyam area of Andhra Pradesh, that shook them to the core. Todate an icon in the Telugu states.
One of the more ignored aspects of the Indian freedom struggle has been the various tribal revolts that broke out against the British rule. Tribals were prohibited from cutting trees for firewood, their traditional Podu cultivation was banned.
. Many protests broke out in the tribal areas of Eastern Indian, notably Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Western Odisha, Bengal, one of the more famous one was that of Birsa Munda in Jharkhand.

Assasination of Rajiv Gandhi, Economic crisis, India was facing a bleak scenario, in 1991 when PVNR became the PM. It is to PVNR's credit that when he stepped down as PM in 1996,more people in India were optimistic about their future, more confident.
Today is the Jayanti of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee the man who composed Vande Mataram, one of the greatest Indian writers of the modern era, noted for his strong female characters, and inspired the Bengali Renaissance.
,Bankim Chandra was born in a small village near Naihati , in the North Paraganas region, his father Yadav Chandra Chattopadhyaya would later become Dy Collector of Midnapore, while one of his brother Sanjib Chandra was also an equally well known novelist.
Bankim graduated from Kolkata's Presidency College in 1858, along with Jadunath Bose, he was one of the first graduates, later got a Law degree. He joined Govt service and retired in 1891, and his tenure was filled with recurring conflicts with the British,
Today is Punya Thithi of Rani Durgavati, the brave Gond queen, who refused to surrender to Emperor Akbar and fought till the end. A true heroine, who took over the kingdom on her husband's death, and defied the mighty Mughal Army. A real Durga.
Rani Durgavati was born to Shalivahan, the Chandela Rajput ruler of Mahoba, famed for his bravery and courage. With her mother passing away early, she was bought up with great care by Shalivahan, and was trained like a Rajput.
Durgavati was trained by her father at a young age in horse riding, hunting and usage of weapons. She was a skilled hunter, markswoman, who took pleasure in going on expeditions, also a skilled archer.
June 22, 1897- Today is the anniversary of a very important event in Indian freedom struggle, the assasination of W.C.Rand by the Chapekar brothers, an event that ignited the revolutionary movement in Maharashtra, and inspired Veer Savarkar.
The Chapekar brothers by their assasination of Rand, provided the spark that would ignite the revolutionary movement in Maharashtra. Tilak had already emerged as a leader in his own right, but the movement was looking for that one spark which cud set it afire.
And the Chapekar brothers provided that spark. More than anything, it was also the motivation for Veer Savarkar to plunge headlong into the revolutionary movement. He was mentally prepared already, but was just looking for the motivation, it came from the Chapekars.
Paying tribute to one of the greatest heroes of Indian history, Maharana Pratap on his Jayanti, the hero who defied Akbar and the mighty Mughal Army. A man who never surrendered and fought for Mewar. My hero Rana Pratap.
What do you make of a man who refused to bow before the mighty Mughal emperor Akbar, when all other Rajput rulers did? When his own brothers sided with Akbar, leaving him virtually alone? That was Maharana Pratap, a true hero.

Today is the Jayanti of Dhondu Keshav Karve, aka Maharshi Karve, social reformer who fought for women's education in Maharashtra, as well as widow remarriage. One of the persons who truly deserved the Bharat Ratna, and set up a chain of institutions.
Dhondo Keshav Karve, was born on April 18,1858 to Keshava Pant and Laxmibai in Ratnagiri district, located in the Konkan. Though an aristocratic, well off family in the past, they had fallen on hard times, when he was born and were only saddled with debts to pay.
Keshava Pant took up employment as a clerk near a landlord, in the small town of Koregaon, in Satara district. Dhondo grew up reading religious works like Gurucharitre and Shiva Leelamrita in his strictly religious household.
Chandrashekhar Sitaram Tiwari aka Chandrashekhar Azad, one man surrounded by an entire police force, fough till the last, one bullet remaining, shot himself than surrender on this date in 1931, #Naman on his Punya Thithi.
Chandrashekhar Azad was born Chandrashekhar Sitaram Tiwari on July 23, 1906 in the village of Bhabara, now located in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Located in the midst of thick jungles, surrounded by hills and valleys, this is where he would spend his growing up years.
Though Sitaram Tiwari, was not very well off, and had to struggle due to poverty, he remained honest and never sought to earn money by illegal means. Chandrashekhar grew up under the loving care of his mother Jagrani Devi who wanted her son to be a Sanskrit scholar.
Today is the Jayanti of Nana Fadnavis, the Maratha Machiavelli, who defeated the British twice with his intelligence and diplomacy. As Prime Minister of the Maratha confederacy, he bought it back to the days of glory after the humiliating rout at Panipat. 
Born as Balaji Janardhan Bhanu in Satara district, Nana was his nickname. His grandfather Balaji Bhanu had migrated from the seaside town of Shrivardhan, in the Konkan region, and was a close friend of the first Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath Bhat.
Balaji saved the Peshwa once from the Mughals, and in gratitude, he was conferred the title of Phadnavis. Later when the Peshwas ruled over Pune, he rose among the ranks as the Minister for Finance.
Today is the Jayanti of Swami Shradhananda( as per Thithi though its on Feb 22), one of the great freedom fighters, thinkers, who conducted the first Ghar Wapsi, and was finally assasinated by a Muslim radical. 
Shraddhananda's real name was Munshi Ram Vij. It is ironical though, that his early life showed no signs of greatness to come. He was an atheist, got addicted to gambling, drinking, lust.
His father Nanakchand was a top ranking police officer, and that meant the family was constantly on the move. His atheist beliefs were borne out of his own bitter experiences. Munshi Ram,even tried converting to Christianity and Islam, but he soon grew disillusioned.
Today is Lachit Diwas, the Jayanti of the great Ahom general, Lachit Borphukan who inflicted one of the most humiliating routs on the mighty Mughal Army at the Battle of Saraighat. One of the greatest military heroes, known for his wisdom and strategic brilliance.
While a lot is known about the Marathas, and the valor of Shivaji, not much is really known about the Ahoms, and their spirited resistance to the Mughals. From 1615 when the Mughal Army attacked the Ahom Kingdom to the Battle of Itakhuli in 1682 that saw a decisive Ahom victory.
The animosity between the Ahoms and the Mughal empire went long back, one of the primary factors being their alliance with their rival Koch Behar kingdom. Other factor being aggressive Mughal expansionism, that sought to expand right up to Assam and North East.
