#TodayInHistory The Indian Army captures the town of Dograi, comming within striking range of Lahore, during the 1965 War, and had it not been for an impending ceasefire, would have captured the city too. This however was a follow up to the Battle of Burki.
While the Battle of Asal Uttar is well known during the 1965 War, another equally significant one is the Battle of Burki. where the Indian Army advance very close to Lahore, almost to the verge of capturing it. It was once again a decisive victory.
Burki is a small village, quite close to Lahore, connected to it by the Ichogil canal. This canal was actually built by residents of the city, to protect themselves from future Indian aggressions, and goes all the way up to the Sutlej river. Also called the BRB Canal.

#TodayInHistory Francis Day of East India Company gets a small strip of land from Peda Venkata Raya of Chandragiri, grandson of Aliya Rama Raya, to build a factory and warehouse in 1639 AD. That strip would become the metropolis known as Chennai. Happy #MadrasDay
Chennai, the city where I started my career, stayed there for a year, been there many times after that too. A city close to my heart, of which have some great memories. A city of culture, tradition, and a rather laidback lifestyle. Happy #MadrasDay
Spencer's Plaza in Mount Road, one of our favorite hangout joints. Much before malls became common in India, this was one of the more well known ones. Of course more often than not came here to beat the heat. Not sure if it is still as popular now #MadrasDay

#TodayInHistory The Battle of Colachel takes place in 1741, when the Travancore Kingdom under Marthanda Varma , defeated the Dutch East India company, in a pitched naval battle, putting an end to their plans to establish themselves in India.
Battle of Colachel is significant in many ways, it was the first time a European colonial power( Dutch), would be defeated by an Asian kingdom( Travancore), though Japan would be the first Asian nation to defeat a European power( Russia) at Battle of Port Arthur.
More than that Battle of Colachel, foiled the plans of the Dutch to establish themselves in India, as Prof Sreedhara Menon noted, it was a disaster of the first magnitude for them, and a death blow to their plans to set themselves up on the West Coast.
