2. At the end of the last academic year, I faced a choice--move back in with my parents in Indiana to pursue the freelance writing and speaking opportunities I was getting more of, or adjunct at the University of South Florida for low pay and no benefits. Or find something new.
3. Here's a thread with some of my life story up to the present. The travel to Austria next spring to do a semester of research mentioned in it fell through despite me having been promised it for years.

.@JosiahMHesse and his friends are undertaking a unique project to tour America and document both evangelical subculture and exvangelical stories. If you’re able, throw a few dollars their way.

By the way, if you haven’t read the interview I did with @davidbazan for the Ex-Evangelical Conversations series on #NotYourMissionField, check it out!

Bazan just sort of “preached” an anti-Trump, anti-Pence, anti-toxic masculinity mini “sermon,” and it was great! You couId see a few people in the crowd weren’t thrilled, but at least one person yelled #FuckTrump, and Bazan said “Fuck your boy Pence hard” to massive cheers!
Now Pedro’s rocking out, and damn you can feel that bass in your chest!

1. If you’ve just followed me or hit upon this thread about evangelicals’ appropriation of anti-Nazi rhetoric around abortion for their Christofascist politics, you’ll find plenty on my blog, #NotYourMissionField, if you want to dive deeper into evangelical ideology.
2. On the subject of how evangelicals think about abortion and how that relates to their generally dark view of human nature, you might find this piece interesting:

Here’s more specifically on Eric Metaxas and his weird use of Bonhoeffer for his rabid anti-choice, pro-Trump crusade:

1. I've been meaning to do a little thread to update you all on what's happening in my life (and as an intro for new followers). I just sent off my monthly newsletter for Patreon patrons; with that fresh in my mind, this is probably a good time. Except it's a also a terrible time
2. You see, I've been wanting to do this on a day when we're not all reeling from yet more horrific news, but at this point I have no idea when we might see another day like that, so I guess now will have to do. The biggest news, which some of you know, is that I'm leaving Tampa.
3. Not only am I leaving Tampa, but I am leaving Tampa without full-time employment either here, or where I'm going, a north suburb of Indianapolis. Where I'll live with my parents for a while. How and why that's happening is sort of a #RealAcademicBios story.

1. I'd like to return to @ryanjbell's question of what it means to be #Exvangelical. I suspect that the vast majority of us identifying with the term would agree that there's much more to #BeingExvangelical than dropping a label. But what else do we share? Some thoughts.
2. First off, let me say that no one can speak for all ex-evangelicals, or exvies, as we have come to be known. We do have many overlapping experiences (that are alien and confusing to most Americans) deriving from what @brchastain calls our shared toxic sociocultural heritage.
3. That being said, while some great memoirs and other projects have been out there for years exposing the rot at the core of conservative/white evangelicalism, theocracy rising in the form of Trumpism has galvanized us into forming a more self-conscious and cohesive community.

1. I don't know how many people who teach in Christian schools or Evangelical colleges have spent time on the Russian mission field, but I do know those groups overlap. Whatever the numbers, the broader context around international collaboration in the culture wars is important.
2. @Beachbumjules, I'm not sure if you were worried about Russian influence on American schoolchildren, or American culture warriors' influence on Russians, but both countries have hardline right-wing populist/conservative utopian traditions of their own to draw on.
3. While to varying degrees at varying times Russian Orthodox Christians and American Evangelicals can be at odds with one another, in recent years they have often collaborated at a high level toward the pursuit of "culture wars" goals internationally. There's a long backstory.

I don’t want to give more publicity to this bad faith argument, and Jen doesn’t need me to defend her, but I do have some thoughts. This kind of logic is very commonly employed in conservative circles, and I think a little pushback is completely justified. 😆
We jump off with TWO classic “arguments”:
1) conceding that perhaps a small problem exists somewhere but it’s not widespread.
2) my argument is Real Logic™️ so despite neither of us having data to backup our assertions and experiences, I’m more right than you.
Here’s where Mike makes his bad faith and hyper defensiveness abundantly clear: he frames Jen’s theological shift as rejecting all traditionalists as “backwater bucolic yokels.”

I haven’t listened to this interview yet but this framing is so out of character for JH is comical

1. #YouDontKnowEvangelicals if you don’t see the Christian Right’s fingerprints all over Trump’s move to consider Jerusalem the capital of Israel.
2. But why does it matter to them? It really is all about end times prophecy associated with what’s called premillennial dispensationalist eschatology. #EmptyThePews
3. If you’re hung up on the terminology, it’s the popular version involving a “rapture” of believers at Christ’s return and before the “tribulation.”
