Hello Chicago! Police have closed the Dan Ryan expressway in order to make the point that protesters shutting down the freeway is bad.
This of course has made me late for the protest in which nobody will be allowed to shut down the expressway
And here's the freeway
A woman in tears is soothed by two strangers. She is yelling at the police line about her son having been arrested for no reason. #chicago
In another section of the crowd a dance party has started #chicago
(For better pictures check out @dominicgwinn tonight or tomorrow.)
The scene now: #chicago
And the freeway is now fully shut down #chicago
There is nothing like that surge of a crowd yelling triumphantly about justice
Hundreds more people flooding into the roadway. #chicago
This protest is growing. It is two hours old and growing. #chicago
So far I have spoken with ten mothers. Nine have buried at least one of their children. One woman who's had two sons shot told me that police never even investigated her son's murder. They protest to get the city to act.
A faith leader tells me his congregation is aging but they're out here today hoping to force the mayor and governor to meet with them seriously and talk funding disparities and people nearby scream YES from their perch on a downed sign
On the freeway, chants of "we shut it down!" On the overpass, the call's return "you did that!" #chicago
And we are exiting the freeway. People line the road to cheer us on. Not a single arrest that I've seen #Chicago
There were so many people that the freeway is still full. #chicago
Y'all. I cannot. This little one is so so pleased and asked to have her picture taken #chicago
