Messing around with Photoshop's video editing options. Just ripped this gif of Jamm's win pose from Golden Axe: The Duel! This game had REALLY GOOD ART!

Cham Cham--I mean Jamm was born into a war torn land. She was abandoned by her parents during an enemy invasion, but was taken in by a wild spirit named Degas that raised her among the animals.

After Degas passed away, Jamm continued to wear his pelt and claws. During her super, she casts off his skin and his spirit returns and fires a beam of destructive energy at her opponent.

Jamm's Super is definitely inspired by the God Warrior's beam attack in the landmark 1984 film, Nausicaa, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This scene was animated by a young prodigy named Hideaki Anno who would go on to found Gainax and create Evangelion!

Back to Golden Axe: The Duel. While it didn't have the best gameplay and its animation isn't up to par with the high bar set by Capcom and SNK, the game absolutely excelled at sprite art. Taken frame by frame, it's some of the best sprite art of that era!

I think Sega's rich history of sprite art is actually very underappreciated. They were doing some of the best stuff of the 80s and 90s. Look at how appealing and expressive Jamm looks in every single frame!

Her expression is so perfect. It conveys such surprise and joy and contentment She's reuniting with her beloved father after all! It has the impact of a full portrait, packed into that tiny cluster of squares. This is some dang good pixel art!

She could be the ancestor of Ochaco from My Hero Academia haha. This sprite is from 1994! Sega was really doing some amazing stuff!

Golden Axe: The Duel had such a great cast of characters!

Here's my favorite character. His name is Green and he's half man, half plant. Look at this absolute unit! Such a fresh take on a classic fantasy concept!

I personally think Green has the best sprite out of the entire cast of Golden Axe: The Duel. I used to draw him all the time when I was a kid!

His stage was really cool looking too! Look at those giant structures that recall giant thorny vines as well as the shells of the Ohmu from Nausicaa. And the openings that look like hungry mouths! (maybe they are!) So good!
