15 months ago this week, Jean Jimenez, a 27 Year-Old DREAMer with diagnosed schizophrenia and a prior history of suicide attempts, ended his life after spending 19 days in solitary confinement at ICE's for-profit Stewart immigration prison. 15 more have died since. Why?

Thread: Some rare good immigration news came today. Last yr, as part of a deal to get Iraq off the list of countries in Muslim Ban 1.0, ICE began rounding up 100s of Iraqi nationals who had old, unexecuted deportation orders—nearly all of whom came as refugees. #NashvilleKurds /1
Nashville is home to the largest population of Kurds outside of #Kurdistan. At least 12 and as many as 20 #NashvilleKurds were targeted. amp.tennessean.com/amp/379582001 ICE sought to detain these men in far-flung, for-profit prisons and deport them without hearing to torture/death /2
But @ACLUofMichigan @mjschlanger @CivilRightsCH Code Legal, and partners across the country stepped up and filed class-action habeas litigation that successfully halted these deportations, given people time to find lawyers and file for fear-based protection, and seek bonds /3

Heartfelt apologies for the disappointment felt by my 1000s of new MAGA followers who read the thread I wrote about my meeting with Pres. Obama that’s bounced around 19M times (literally). But maybe you’ll be interested in what @AlexNowrasteh and @mkolken have to say. #FF
It has been amazing to watch a couple thousand people tweet some version of “where was your outrage when Obama did it?!” at liberals and fake news outlets, while simultaneously showing zero outrage now, and doing nothing to stop it. If that’s the takeaway, idk, Man. IDK.
There used to be three or four main idealogical tent poles to conservatism and the Republican Party: (1) libertarianism/limited government “less government = more freedom; (2) “Moral Majority”/WWJD/“values voters” (3) Fiscal conservatives (4) strong national defense. Not anymore.

@Gregoire1125, warrior with the @LegalAidNYC Immigration Pro Bono project, is doing as much as anyone in immigration courts and federal courts across the country to hold government officials accountable when they make shit up, tear families apart, and deport US Citizens.
Secret evidence, secret courts, and purportedly unreviewable allegations of gang associations are being used to stigmatize Central American migrants, and scapegoat immigrant communities. @ILRC_SF @OCAD_CHI @NIPNLG @ACLU_NorCal and @abogadatejana and others are fighting back.
