The really tired plot of #Insatiable reminded me more of the revenge fantasy of Carrie than the redemption fantasies (w. the “revenge” more subtle) of male-centered superhero stories, where the marginalized outsider gains great powers (Captain America, Spider-Man, etc)
Note the classic Superman dynamic: Clark Kent is an unassuming geek, and Lois must learn to love him to “deserve” Superman. I can’t immediately think of versions of this dynamic with the genders reversed.
Buffy, for instance, is marginalized by powers and the responsibilities that complicate her life. But prior to becoming the Slayer, she is living a swell existence. She’s not Peter Parker or frail Steve Rogers.
It’s important to note that Whedon not-so-subtly depicts Buffy as shallow before her powers marginalize her and “force” her to hang out with the school librarian and dorks (one of whom is Whedon’s admitted author substitute)
Weirdly, Buffy’s own powers become Xander’s “spider bite,” it’s what changes his life in a positive way so that he’s fighting bad guys alongside the idealized woman of his dreams.
But at this point in time, it seems so weird that Insatiable would be tell a story that at least on the surface recalls the regressive revenge fantasies of the past.
Women are so overtly into superheroes and the fantasy genre. A fat girl as the lead in a Harry Potter type series or a fat girl as the Doctor’s new companion, etc... all ways in which a marginalized person can escape an oppressive life.
But what is key about redemption stories like this, as opposed to tragic revenge fantasies, is that the hero learns to love herself. She was special all along.
Hey, she now has magic powers or super strength or can travel through time, but it’s who she’s always been that allows her to meet these new challenges.
We tell this basic story repeatedly about young men. We rarely do about young women, especially fat women. It’s a shame.

Isn't this also more an employment issue than a legal one? This came up with Franken, who I also thought should've resigned. "Due process" and "presumption of innocence" are important when talking about putting someone in jail. Here we're talking abt not putting someone on SCOTUS
Roy Moore and Al Franken weren't deprived of a natural right (their "freedom"). They lost Senate seats, which are obviously privileges that a rare number of people enjoy.
When a former teacher or coworker comments on your past performance, they aren't treated like witnesses at a trial. They don't testify under oath nor are their cross examined.
Obama "lectures" us is racist. Hillary "lectures" us is sexist. Period. It's especially obvious coming from the "traditional values, personal responsibility crowd." They curiously don't consider white men telling, say, women or LGBT how to behave "lecturing."
It's such a fascinating scam. "I'm not racist or a misogynist. I just take issue with black men or women leading or commanding us. If they can find a way to lead a country as commander in chief without doing that, I'm all for it."
"Did you see Jeff Flake's moving rebuttal of Trump on the Senate floor? Or how McCain used to take it to Trump? That's leadership! When Booker or Obama do anything similar, it's lecturing. When Harris or Hillary do it, my penis falls off."
A friend shared @rubyhamad ‘s article on his FB page. His (white) women friends responded about how kt was “annoying” and “racist.” (“I never say all black women do this!”) There was non ironic tone policing (it would be more “persuasive” if she’d said “some” white women do this)
Let’s say it’s 2021 and Pres. Harris has nominated a replacement for RBG. Doug Jones meets with them and attempts to calm his constituents about right wing fears the judge will be hostile to the 2nd Amendment.
I can see Jones making a similar statement, but Democrats are far more moderate on the issue and their extreme positions are clearly laid out (assault weapons ban’
Republicans are far more extreme about overturning Roe. I know few elected Democrats who’ve suggested repealing the 2nd amendment.
The person who wrote the @nytimes how to have a "real conversation" about race op-ed is both a racist and an idiot. That is the extent of my interest in a "real conversation" with them.
"I'm not racist. I just have a Confederate flag on my car to honor dead people I never met, whose feelings matter more to me than actual living black people. Also, never talk to me about slavery. The lynching museum is rude."
"Taking a knee during the national anthem is disrespectful. Worse than actual police violence against black people, which I don't care about. Cops are great. It's Obamacare that's fascism!"
I bet the vast Robinson fortune that you will not criticize how Paul Ryan spends his post-Speakership years even though he presided over the complete surrendering of the GOP to Trump.
This just reminds me of how "inside baseball" political pundits have become. All they care about is the number of home runs. Obama and HRC might have lost on a literal level but they can also sleep at night. Shouldn't that count for something? And it's a problem that it doesn't.
No one questions W. Bush enjoying Texas brisket and painting while his Republican successor in the White House possibly conspired with a hostile foreign power.
