Watching this I remember a nearly identical case I was peripherally involved in. A young boy, misdiagnosis, Group A streptococcus sepsis, which lead to his death.

The hospital was overrun, in special measures, with multiple failures in communication. Just like Leicester.

In the #BawaGarba case (2011)- the hospital area Jack was seen in was run by 1 staff nurse and 2 agency nurses. Since 2010: Substantive NHS budgets for nursing staff have been cut, increasing reliance on agency staff.

Hadiza was covering another persons job that day. Rota gaps affect 2/3 of Doctors in 2017.

Hadiza is a paediatric trainee and the paediatric consultant on call that day was not on site. 23% of paediatric posts at Hadiza’s level were vacant in 2017.

All of us can understand a day like Hadiza’s. All of us can understand what that might mean, at the wrong time, with the wrong patient, like Hadiza.

I don’t know a single doctor, hand on heart, that became a doctor for any other reason than they really care about what they do. Mistakes devastate us. Watch the documentary above and tell me that isn’t the case.

For 8 years the conditions that led to the death of Jack have persisted, fermented and worsened. In some areas every day is that day, every patient could be Jack. We are all Hadiza.

And in all the tragedy let us make something good: the system is failing and dangerous and here is the starkest example of that. The system is underfunded and understaffed. Let’s do something about it. /end
