#Disability twitter, #medtwitter , let us have a discussion about patients discussing #MedicalTrauma on here. A Thread:
#chronicillness #ChronicPain #Chroniclife #MedTraumaChat #Spoonie
2) Last night, a fellow advocate posted a very handy guide for HCPs & patients abt treating patients who are trauma survivors: Trauma Informed Care - Disclosures and Care Transitions healthasahumanright.wordpress.com/2018/08/23/tra… #medtwitter #Disability #chronicillness #medtraumachat #spoonie
3) It's a good resource for both #patients & HCPs, please read it if you have a moment.
This led to a helpful discussion about #MedicalTrauma between an HPC and the person who wrote this guide, who has had experiences with this,
#Disability #medtwitter #chronicillness #Spoonie
4) Let's talk about #MedicalTrauma. It can happen for a variety of reasons, medical abuse, neglect, gaslighting, delayed care, rape/sexual assault, & lack of care from an HPC. It can happen in an office,ED/ER, It's hard for #medtwitter to hear, but it happens all the time.
5) #MedicalTrauma, specifically can lead things like patients not going to see a Dr. or go to the ER when they need to, extra anxiety before appts,,tests, & procedures, extra anxiety during appts, tests, & procedures, not being able to trust your Dr., et al #Disabilty #medtwitter
6) Some of us have #PTSD, and as such, "episodes" can be triggered by certain things.
This is not something to be taken lightly by HCPs, or anyone. #medtwitter #Disability #ChronicPain #chronicillness #chroniclife #Spoonie
7) Back to what happened, and why we're having a talk about it.
HPC & patient were talking about the patient's #MedicalTrauma, the HPC mentioned "white coat syndrome", & another HPC swooped in to save the day from "doctor-bashing". #medtwitter #Disability #chronicillness #Spoonie
7) This Dr. was told there was no "doctor-bashing" going on, but it was not enough. The patient was nice to the Dr. when she entereded a #NotAllDoctors state, but disagreed at some point, and pointed out the Dr. was triggering her by dismissing the original conversation.
8) The Dr. kept going, escalating the situation, the patient had to bow out of the conversation because she was reliving things triggered by the Dr was ignoring that #MedicalTruma was being discussed. #Disability #Medtwitter #chronicillness #ChronicPain #MedTraumaChat #Spoonie
9) This was harmful for the patient. The Dr. was dismissive of her experiences by straight up ignoring her saying she had been through #MedicalTrauama.
This is unprofessional.
It's also troll-like to invade a conversation about an abusive incident and try to defend the abuser.
10) When patients talk about #MedicalTrauma, let them talk.
We know there are great doctors out there, They're not the ones who have harmed us.
#medtwitter #Disability #chronicillness #ChronicPain #MedTraumaChat #Spoonie #Chroniclife
11) Do not dismiss us. If you do not like the things we are saying, don't cover for or just watch colleagues mistreat patients in any way. Advocate for your patients, if you aren't doing so already. Tell med schools to include patient voices. #medtwitter #MedicalTrauma #Disability
12) Definitely don't make things worse, don't escalate situations, don't trigger trauma patients. Don't do it at work, don't do it online. It does not help us work together. It is not constructive. It is harmful.
