1/Children & young people with autism and learning disabilities who could be living in the community with specialist support are languishing for years in Assessment & Treatment Units, some of them locked up 24/7 in isolation rooms, bec of severe financial pressure on Local Auths
2/ At the same time, private providers running these ATUs are raking in profits, being paid £452m per yr in what has become a market driven provision where autistic and LD people are little more than commodities
3/ This in spite of the fact that caring for them in the community would be far less expensive not to mention far better for the individuals concerned, their quality of life, their security and safety and their wellbeing

FFS. @onthemedia just aired a long exchange of @JHockenberry's editor explaining JH couldn't really do damage to the women he sexually harassed since he's in a wheelchair!

Using #disability to excuse sexual harassment FOR WHICH JH WAS FIRED is outrageous. I'll explain why.
1/
First, like @JHockenberry, I am also paralyzed and in a wheelchair. And myriad studies have shown women who are #disabled are more likely to be sexually harassed and assaulted than non-disabled women. There is, in fact, also, an entire porn culture around women in wheelchairs.
2/
There is also a long, extended discourse about how #disabled men deserve/need sexual releases. (There is no such discourse about disabled women.) Hockenberry's editor claimed, while laughing, "he can't exactly leap up & grab someone."

Ugh.

I signed this petition. I never sign online petitions. But #Afflicted cannot be allowed to stand. chn.ge/2LcFWGj via @Change
Documentaries are meant to give a view of a subject or topic on a FACTUAL basis. Their opinion isn't supposed to be centered unless the subject is themselves.
#Afflicted is heavily slanted toward the erroneous assumption that the chronically ill patients are

faking,

have psychological illnesses rather than physical diseases,

or somehow in denial.

And I ask you- to what end?

1/I've said many times that I am poor because I am unemployed (except for my writing) and I am unemployed because I am disabled.

I am now officially rejecting that shit.

I am still disabled. I still am not employed.

#Disability #ChronicIllness #poverty
2/But the reason I am unemployed is because society has deemed me disposable. This isn't on me.

#disabled #DisabledPeopleMatter #PplWDisabilitiesMATTER
3/It's because society has decided the WANTS of the abled (specifically in my case, to use fragrance and decorate with balloons) are more important than my survival. This isn't on me.

🔥FIRE THREAD🔥

A Fierce Rant About

SERVICE ANIMALS IN AMERICA

from @IvanThrone

The Dark Triad Man

I'm going to talk about handlers and assholes, and how to tell the difference when someone claims their four-legged creature is a #ServiceDog.

Ready for fire, people?

/1
The very first thing we're going to do is define #ServiceDog.

There's only ONE definition that matters in America:

"Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities."

ada.gov/service_animal…

NOW...

/2
Repeat after me, children:

IF IT IS NOT A DOG

IT IS NOT A SERVICE ANIMAL.

This is not Complicated:

If it is a Pig, a Duck, a Peacock, a Snake, a Bird, a Fish, or bloody God damn Hamster, it is...

NOT A SERVICE ANIMAL

Get the hell off my plane!

"DADDY! LOOK AT THAT SMALL MA..."

Thread: Some advice for parents when your small child sees someone with #dwarfism for the first time.

Please read, RT, and, if you yourself are a #dwarf or #disabled person, add your own advice.

1/
"MUMMY! THAT BOY HAS A *BEARD*!?!"

I can imagine you feel embarrassed right now…

...but what you do next helps set the foundations on which your child will build their understanding of #dwarfism, #disability, and difference.

2/
The first thing to say is: don't ever encourage your child to point and laugh at people who are different. Ever.

That might seem obvious, but I've encountered parents who’ve done so - and even filmed me, too.

But these are a tiny minority, so let's move on...

7 years ago, I wrote "Flushing the Potty Panic" for @transadvocate. I opined the solution to unlawful #discrimination in access to public accommodations in which nudity is unavoidable—toilets, showers, locker/dressing/changing rooms—because "separate but equal" is illegal…
is to ensure via #law that a sufficient number of secure, single user, #disability-accessible, #family-friendly facilities are provided for all people who for any reason desire or require #privacy or assistance, in the manner of the #ADA Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990…
at the same time we ensure by law that all people have the right to be free from unlawful discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, sexual or affectional orientation, or gender identity, appearance, expression, or behavior, regardless of sex or gender assigned at birth…

[food]

A really weird thing about #MCAS is that I can eat a food and be fine, but if I eat leftovers of the exact same food a day or two later I'm ... not fine

Before I knew abt MCAS, I thought I was just immunosuppressed and reacting to bacteria other people could tolerate
This is sort of true, actually

I was probably reacting to the products of microbes breaking down food

More on the science of that here

#MCAS

[food]

When I have a bad MCAS reaction, it looks a LOT like food poisoning

I won't go into the gory details, but at my worst I need IV fluids and prescription strength anti-nausea meds (which happen to also treat anaphylaxis like symptom)

A gentle reminder.

I'm #actuallyautistic and like many of us, using a telephone is not something that's top of our list when it comes to communicating.

For me, auditory processing disorder makes it difficult to hear and parse the content. And there's a component of sensory
Processing difficulty for me when it comes to talking on the phone as well.

But like many #actuallyautistic I have several co-occurring conditions.

2 of them, #dyslexia and #dyspraxia make things quite a struggle for me.

One of the biggest ways they effect me is
Communication.

Communication for me as an #actuallyautistic #Dyslexic is like a living jenga puzzle. At any second a learning or physical #disability is moving those pieces on me and one wrong move and it all comes down.

Thank goodness I live in a time with so many various

More hospital for me, today.
The rest of you, remember to breathe and keep the toxic at bay.
And take in some beauty.

Thanks so much to all the lovely, kind people wishing me well. Your support is so vital.

It was a harrowing day. #Cancer is a slog, but I am managing (except for some trolls who have sad lives).

I remain grateful for all of you, for great docs, for my fab fam.

Thank you. 💜🌿
Filing columns from hospital beds is exhausting.
Once, when I was at @PhillyDailyNews, before email was a thing, I wrote my copy long-hand from the ICU. That story, about the ICU, was later nom'd for Pulitzer, but all I remember was thinking those might be my last written words.

Thread: I have #dwarfism.

I knew who the Seven #Dwarfs were by the age of ten.

I knew who Mini Me was by 13.

I was 31 when I learned who Benjamin Lay was.

This is important. Please read and RT.

1/
Born in England 1682, Benjamin Lay was among the first known radical abolitionists.

He was fearless, compassionate, and principled.

He was also a #dwarf

2/
A "living stick of dynamite", Benjamin Lay was "one of the very first to call for the abolition of slavery".

He wrote one of the world's first abolitionist books - calling for the church to cast out slave owners.

Thread: following my tweet about the word "M*dget", lots of people are asking "but what do we call people with #dwarfism?". Listen close...

Please RT 1/
I promise you: the best thing to call someone with #dwarfism is *their name*.

If you don't know their name, ask yourself why you need to refer to their body before knowing who they are. This is important. 2/
3/ Know their name? Good. Then politely ask them how they like to refer to themselves.

It's for them to decide, not you. They are the author of the dictionary that defines them*

Don't know their name? See 2/.

I had another life-threatening heart/lung episode today.
I'm not sure how much of it had to do with my cutting my heart meds back to once a day while appealing the increased price by my health insurance from $120 for 60 pills to $1k for 60 pills.
We had to call 9/11.
Scary.
1/
I couldn't afford to go to the hospital--when you call 9/11 the city charges you $1,200 for the trip to nearest hospital.
They only accept cash.
The EMTs checked me out, told me to take the heart meds the way they were prescribed, established I wasn't in VFib, just SVT AFib.
2/
So all day, instead of doing work that needs to be done, I have been trying to get my heart rate under 140, which given my lung meds increase my heart rate, has been more work: breathing exercises my PT taught me, single nostril breathing @HillaryClinton taught me (try it).

I have some #NewYearsResolutions to share.

You all know I don't use foul language on here, but this iconic warrior trope seems a good place to start 2018.
1/
I've spent 3yrs reporting on Trump's every egregious move. I'll still be doing that in 2018, but I'll also be focusing on women running for office.

Traditionally women have received less/worse coverage than men. That must change. Only news orgs/reporters can change this.
2/

/
One of my #NewYearsResolutions
is to beat back #cancer.

In 2017 I didn't prioritize my time within the possibility of my death hovering. I must do that in 2018 and I would urge EVERYONE to live more like you have limited time rather than limitless time.

Focus, act, #resist.

Today I'm going to tweet a bit on #mypainday about my experience with chronic pain, bc I think it can be hard to understand if you don't have it.

I'll add some drawings from my pain sketchbook too. Because pictures! ✏ A colour pencil drawing on plain paper, of a fallen field maple leaf with a grey pigeon feather threaded through it in two places, via holes on either side of the midvein. The leaf is yellow, brown, and green, in a state of partial decay.
I have chronic pain because I smooshed 2 arts of my spine - the lumbar part at the bottom, and the cervical part at the top (my neck). This affects the spinal nerves that control my legs + foot, & arms + hands. So those are the parts that hurt.
I manage my pain with the smallest amount of medication that is still effective on any given day, physio exercises, psychological exercises, & a supportive partner #mypainday

Trump's admin has made life exceedingly difficult for people like me who are fighting #cancer & dealing with extreme medical costs.

Obama said in 2009 that he hated watching his mother forced to work to pay bills as she fought for her life.

Many of us are still doing this.
Now Trump wants to make yet another critic of #ACA--the only buffer sick & #disabled Americans have until we get #UHC--head of HHS.

#AlexAzar is an actual lobbyist for #BigPharma.
And cut his legal teeth--he's a lawyer--working for #KenStarr investigating the Clintons.
Anyone who thinks sick/#disabled people are going to get a fair shake under this presidency aren't thinking clearly. And while I know we have more Russia news and
more sexual abuse claims today, this appointment impacts EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN WHO IS NOT RICH and it's barely news.

Lots of new people, hi! A thing I do every few nights is talk about #myspoons - in #spoonie parlance it’s shorthand referencing energy.
A #spoonie is a person w an invisible #disability. You might not realize it but we’re everywhere. If you're hiding illness you might be one.
The term comes from The Spoon Theory written by Christine Miserandino (@bydls)
