Beautiful
(A microburst Twitter essay--to be finished before I'm done with my cough drop)

I just had an epiphany: #beautiful has become my new favorite word. That may seem strange given my circumstances. In June 2017 I was diagnosed with incurable stage IV #lungcancer.
I naively thought that maybe my lifetime of being a health and fitness junkie would insulate me from such a medical fate. Wrong. And So here I am, fifty-one years old and not sure how much time I have left on earth. I know I could, or maybe should, feel angry, cheated, jaded.
But I don't. I have this epiphany that my new favorite word is beautiful and I'm not sure why. There is nothing beautiful about what I've gone through since my diagnosis--lots of physical and emotional distress to be sure. But yet, I keep find

I gotta tell you, folks, I have been so sick for the past 2wks, I have really been scared.

Sept 22 House GOP passed their new cuts to Social Security Medicaid and Medicare out of committee. $1.2T in cuts.

That's the safety net.

I've always hoped I could fall there. No more.
I had to call my bestie today to have her come up and stay with me while The Wife is teaching.

Even with the oxygen, hard to breathe.

I had to cancel interviews for tomorrow, a radio appearance for Friday.

Chronic illness like #cancer is incapacitating at times.
We need to do better for sick and #disabled Americans.

It is so hard to work and be sick.

Never getting better sick.

Sometimes you can just take a bizarre statement about its logical conclusion. And that can be your answer.
An example from real life:

Me: "So instead of going to the doctor to rule out the #cancer being back, your solution is to do nothing and let me suffer through these symptoms? And risk dying?"

Him: "No?"

Me: "Okay."
The fear that your loved one may due is real. And acceptable. And reasonable.

But the solution is never "let's ignore your equally real pain & suffering & see if it goes away."

I had this ugly exchange with a self-styled resister today that left me very upset
and reminded me yet again that #lesbians are barely tolerated by many str8 women.

But it never ceases to be painful when the reality comes at you with the force of a metaphoric slap.
Stress is a killer.

It's vital we protect ourselves from toxic situations and people.

This is especially true for those of us with #cancer or other chronic illness.

Self-care includes blocking people who undermine your goals and who attack you. They don't deserve your energy.
Folks on here who came to my defense/supported me yesterday? You are the best of Twitter.

I got hundreds of messages of care and concern. It helped remind me that toxic exchanges can hurt us deeply but the people who matter build us up.

Thank you so much for your support. 💜🌿

.@SarahbaxterSTM's argues that #fibromyalgia, #mecfs, #lupus, #depression, self-harming and #anorexia are caused by female ambition and fragility.

This is just so silly. In the 19th century, there was a panic in the medical profession (and among social commentators) about women becoming ill with neurological and "nervous" conditions because they were overworking their brains/nerves, which were naturally weaker than men's.
This “fact” was used to bolster the argument in favor of stopping women's formal education after age 16 and most certainly not letting them enroll in university.

It's 3:30am and I am crying because I am just so sick and this past week has been an incredible struggle to find some kind of balance between grasping for shreds of wellness and trying to carry on writing and meeting deadlines.

It's just so terrible.
In the midst of this it is the grim anniversary of my being paralyzed. And #PTSD does not take a holiday.

I honestly cannot bear how my life is some days. The restrictions, the relentless pain, the anxiety, the yearning to be well.

I miss wholeness. Even the wholeness I had.
I'm not asking anyone for anything. I'm just crushed by all of it in this moment.

It is so hard knowing this is how it will be for always.

And I want to be brave and model that for others, but dear G*d suffering is NOT ennobling. It just wears you down every blessed day.

Sabar, #Aries. Jangan ngomel dan komplen terus. Makin ditekan, dia nanti makin menjauh.

Nah, kalo #Taurus diminta buat senang-senang. Mumpung besok libur kan? Cobalah sesuatu yang baru dan yang kamu suka.

#Gemini, jangan terus ngasih ikannya. Kasih kailnya biar dia mandiri.
Kadang memang harus ada yang diributin biar urusannya beres ya, #Cancer? Ya masa harus disimpen sendiri terus...

Sedih itu manusiawi, #Leo. Nggak usah ditutupi. Hibur diri sendiri aja, senang-senang sendiri. Give yourself some love.
Jangan mikirin masalah percintaan terus, #Virgo.

Cancer is sustained abnormal growth, the loss of tightly regulated mechanisms to control cell division and growth.

Every species of multicellular organism gets #cancer.
Sharks.
Naked mole rats.
Lobsters.
even trees.

Let's talk about tree cancer.
When a tree is injured, infected, or stressed, the cells affected can undergo a loss of normal function and out of control growth. These outgrowths show poor cellular organization, producing odd wood-grain patterns and blobby outgrowths we call burls.
The similarities to mammalian cancer is obvious in a side-by-side comparison of tumor and burl.

I think the real question is "how do we create the means and foundation for the agenda," not the money to pay for it.

We always get money by taxing working class and middle class people.
That's how we pay for the two wars we've been in for over 15yrs.
The #healthcare industry employs millions of Americans.
In the only vision Bernie Sanders has ever presented, that somehow disappears and is replaced by something completely different....by magic. He has never had a plan for it or "breaking up the banks."
nydailynews.com/opinion/transc…
The most workable--and quick--plan we could get (if people vote in November and the Democrats regain the House)--is the #MedicareExtraForAll plan.

Getting people to give up their employer-paid insurance will be hard, but this could convince everyone.

@jack Dear Jack, there is not the "perception of #shadowbanning”, but the reality of it and much worse: The #suspension of many bona fide #Twitter-users, who do not troll, harass or engage in #hatespeech, but simply push a conservative agenda. This happened in the #US, #UK, FRA & #GER.
@jack 2. You now find many of those accounts on #GAB & users like #KoljaBonke, an author from #Frankfurt, who was suspended on #Twitter for giving daily updates about migrant #crime in #Germany (just posting articles or police reports). So content you find in a newspaper!
@jack 3. So Jack, this is NOT about perception, but your "conversational health work" is clearly just one sided #censorship, which many users have experienced for years, from the reality of #shadowbanning, to the many #suspensions! @nicolabeerfdp

A7. It changes with the crowd and the space. There are things I'll talk about on Twitter or Facebook that I won't on my blog or can't in person.

My filter is usually whether it might help someone who is in our community or should be. #SpoonieChat
A7. The exception is #cancer. There's too much silence around cancer and a third of us will get it. So the rest of us will know people with it.

#SpoonieChat
A7. The treatment decisions are off-limits though. So many people think they know the #cancer cure, but their "cures" are hurting folks. #SpoonieChat

The MAJORITY of food trends are either false or harmful to #cancer patients and people with #chronicillness.

Spread the word to people not to medically diagnose their friends when even the docs and naturopathic practitioners, and trusted sources are often wrong!
Even in cases where it is proven that changing a part of your diet fixes something in healthy people?

Our bodies are not normal. We. Are not normal. Our bodies often have multiple conflicting ailments where fixing one thing breaks something else.
Sometimes we have achieved a happy medium that allows us the most freedom, rather than a near-cure that keeps us prisoner to treatments we can’t afford.

A day away from Twitter to face down #cancer drama with medical folks.
Then dealing with the financial devastation wrought by this administration on sick people with a social worker assigned to me via my health insurance.

I am so angry, it's palpable.
Trump is a monster.
I know we're all supposed to be drinking the #civility KoolAid--but I am so angry with the folks who put us here.

I guess that civility mantra is easier if you have money and aren't sick/#disabled.

Oh-my-G*d am I angry.
I'm angry for everyone--even the smug 3rd party purists still trying to keep us from winning back the House & Senate because something something privileged bs.

LOOK AT THESE #SCOTUS RULINGS!

Look at just 600 days of Trump.

Do NOT demand #civility of me.

I don't want to die.

I'm one of a few million Americans awake when we should be sleeping because of the pain of #cancer or some other chronic illness.

Adding to our sleeplessness is knowing #healthcare is under threat. We may not be able to afford it due to the #GOP's actions.

It's terrorizing.
My parents were Civil Rights workers. My father was a Freedom Rider. As a small child I was taught the legacy of #MLK.
I watched people invoking MLK on Monday. Not in defense of #votingrights or in outrage over how the #SCOTUS ruled on two pivotal cases on gerrymandering.
2/
MLK wasn't being invoked for #votingrights but for Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who lies to America every day about policies that could very well kill me & others.

Policies that are hurting millions.

Policies that have kept me a citizen without equal rights in my own country.

Looking at my #Gucci, it's about that time. It's #Cancer time. (Older heads will know, I likely don't literally have a Gucci. But a stroll down hip-hop memory lane is apt for this sign, no?)
And this is special for me since there might be folks of a particular sign, either by Sun, moon or rising, who are your Ride-or-die folks. Well, #Cancers are mine. I don't have to go looking for them or that. It just happens. Consistently. So, they're dear people for me.
Once consciousness has explored dimensions of risk & curiosity in #Gemini, it seeks out safety, responsibility, containment & renewal in #Cancer

I have been battling a new health crisis since my surgery was postponed June 15.

There is no way to adequately articulate--even as a writer--the breadth of hardship inflicted on sick Americans by the Trump presidency & Trump-led #GOP, like lame-duck @SpeakerRyan.
#healthcare
1/
The @CDCgov cites 133M as the number of chronically-ill Americans who have #cancer, like I do, or another illness that impedes their daily lives.

The majority of that 40% of the US population still have to work despite often disabling illness because we cannot afford not to.
2/
I've been writing about #healthcare in America since I was a cub reporter and put on a small story in the mid-80s that turned into a much bigger story: #AIDS.

When you're in your 20s writing about other 20somethings dying, it changes you.

Then I got #breastcancer at 26.

The Wife's fam are immigrants.
So tonight we were talking about #JohnKelly.

I am imagining #MothersDay with the fam all together & The Wife's mother, whose parents were a carpenter & a lacemaker who didn't speak English. The Wife's mother is a painter & retired art professor.
#JohnKelly's xenophobia & racism are over-the-top, even for someone in the Trump administration. How can someone who lost a child be so cavalier about children being separated from their mothers? How can he claim immigrants can't assimilate? How do Trump's people talk like this?
#HeyJohnKelly
My father's mother was from Sweden, never went to school past 5th grade. Her husband, my grandfather, never went past 8th. She took in washing, he was a photographer. They were both functionally illiterate.

My father won a scholarship to an Ivy League college.

More hospital for me, today.
The rest of you, remember to breathe and keep the toxic at bay.
And take in some beauty.

The tulips and daffodils are in bloom!
Thanks so much to all the lovely, kind people wishing me well. Your support is so vital.

It was a harrowing day. #Cancer is a slog, but I am managing (except for some trolls who have sad lives).

I remain grateful for all of you, for great docs, for my fab fam.

Thank you. 💜🌿
Filing columns from hospital beds is exhausting.
Once, when I was at @PhillyDailyNews, before email was a thing, I wrote my copy long-hand from the ICU. That story, about the ICU, was later nom'd for Pulitzer, but all I remember was thinking those might be my last written words.

Afternoon twitterverse! Let’s talk about AI in Radiology, which is the main focus in my research.
Any talk of AI begs for a definition of AI, and there are as many definitions as there startups that are “AI-enabled”.
For our purposes we'll just call anything that performs one of the higher level behaviours associated with animals e.g. learning, planning, problem-solving, creating etc.
