#LyinTed Ted Cruz likes to talk about this whole Kaepernik/Anthem issue, wants to make it into a wedge to divide Texans. #LyinTed and his ally Trump are desperate to make this about disrespecting the flag, the military, veterans, the United States. nowthisnews.com/videos/politic…
#LyinTed may bring this up in the debate tonight. He will try to paint @BetoORourke as a far-left radical, out of touch with Texans. But here's the thing. Most veterans know that these protests are not disrespectful of America or what we stand for.
@VeteransForBeto strongly believe that all Americans have an absolute right to protest injustice. And the continuing police killings of African-American men and boys continues, most recently right here in Texas, in Dallas, with the killing of #BothamJean by a Dallas cop.

Instead of being converted to hate, convert those who hate to the way of love. - "Do good to them that hate you." This is one of the ways people of goodwill can help stop the descending spiral of psychological, physical & systemic violence. Overcome evil with good. #LoveWinsOver
You can love and do good to them that hate you and work for justice at the same time. SEE #MLK. We quote him, but it’s in the living.
In fact, love frees us up to work for justice in the most strategic, comprehensive ways. Hate clouds our judgement.

1/10 Sunday night musings on the efficacy of “graphic” images in advancing animal welfare
2/10 It seems like graphic images of animal suffering can be helpful for those already mitigating suffering; less helpful for those not currently open to considering the plight of other sentient beings’ suffering at all, which seems a proportionally small but crucial audience.
3/10 The extent to which different forms of animal suffering - whether thru words or images - move individuals to change wrt animals - and how it can most effectively be done, is worthy of its own elaborate analysis. Some great orgs like @Faunalytics working on this.

This is what @LenoirForMayor espouses. He said in the Rotary Club debate that it doesn’t matter how much you make, it matters how you spend it. And he doesn’t miss a chance to talk about the financial literacy classes his (trustee) office promotes.
A popular nonprofit pairs people making minimum wage with middle/upper-middle class residents for this financial literacy curriculum.

I held my tongue as they told the participants to save 10% of their income.
Imagjne telling someone who makes $7.25/hour (TN minimum wage) and someone who makes $75,000 that to be financially responsible, they must save 10% of their income.

It’s laughable, but that’s what passes for faith-based social services in the poorest large metro in the nation.

White supremacy isn't just burning crosses and swastikas. It's also silencing, tone-policing and shaming. It's good white folks private assurances of support and public silence. It's public outcry of caged kids and private inaction. It's fast, slow, deep and shallow.
White supremacy loves #MLK I Have A Dream Speech but prefers to sweep this one under the rug. "First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate."
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice;"

Coretta Scott King founded @TheKingCenter 50 years ago today! Its website is where I first became aquainted with #MLK's 6 Principles of Nonviolence. See King Philosophy under About tab at TheKingCenter.org . I review these + Mrs. King's words about freedom often. . . .
"Freedom is never really won. You earn it and win it in every generation. That is what we have not taught young people, or older ones for that matter. You do not finally win a state of freedom that is protected forever. It doesn't work that way."
- Coretta Scott
That would be a quote by Coretta Scott King.

My parents were Civil Rights workers. My father was a Freedom Rider. The calls for #civility were constant.
.@repjohnlewis, our Civil Rights icon, was nearly killed in non-violent actions.

#Civility has never been two-ways. Civility has never benefited the oppressed.
#Civility still got #MLK and #RosaParks arrested.

Because those in power are never civil.

I'm one of a few million Americans awake when we should be sleeping because of the pain of #cancer or some other chronic illness.

Adding to our sleeplessness is knowing #healthcare is under threat. We may not be able to afford it due to the #GOP's actions.

It's terrorizing.
My parents were Civil Rights workers. My father was a Freedom Rider. As a small child I was taught the legacy of #MLK.
I watched people invoking MLK on Monday. Not in defense of #votingrights or in outrage over how the #SCOTUS ruled on two pivotal cases on gerrymandering.
2/
MLK wasn't being invoked for #votingrights but for Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who lies to America every day about policies that could very well kill me & others.

Policies that are hurting millions.

Policies that have kept me a citizen without equal rights in my own country.

Un-sanitize my father. It’s hypocritical to “celebrate” #MLK, but be against justice and true peace; and to demonize those who share truth about injustice. This, too, is MLK: “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”
How can you love #MLK and love separating immigrant children from their families?
How can you love #MLK and not feel pain when a 10-year Black boy is handcuffed by police for fitting a description?

I was born 8 days before #BobbyKennedy was shot. My mother was still in hospital post-Caesarean; she heard the news on telly. For me, #RFK50, #MLK, #JFK are behind me, but cast a long shadow. To quote Meatloaf, objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are. 1/
When I was young, I wanted to know everything about the Kennedys and MLK, these men whose loss traumatised my parents' generation. I'll remember a PE teacher saying, 'Of course we're here. We killed the greatest leaders we had.' JFK's and MLK's losses broke my heart, but 2/
I always had a particularly strong reaction to RFK's - I would start sobbing and be unable to stop; it was like the world had shattered and could never be put back together. I wondered why, and it's only now that I have a glimmer of understanding. JFK became president. 3/

#SteveBannon has dangerously and erroneously co-opted my father’s name, work and words.

Bannon’s assertion that my father, #MLK, would be proud of Donald Trump wholly ignores Daddy’s commitment to people of all races, nationalities, etc. being treated with dignity and respect.
My father’s concerns were not sectional, but global. He was an activist for the civil rights of Black people in America, but he was also an activist for human rights. #MLK
Further, he would not refer to people as “illegal aliens.” The term is degrading and does not reflect his belief that we are all a part of the human family. #MLK

1. Kanye West is making massive headlines due to his recent support of Trump. But we need to go back a few years and see this in a larger and altogether more frightening context. It’s a story that clearly demonstrates the evil methods of the #DeepState.
2. Kanye’s conservative leanings are not new. Aside from a rap artist, he’s advocated issues similar to those that made #MLK a target of the Left. School choice, personal responsibility in the black community and entrepreneurship.
3. In fact, even back in 2015 when he first floated the idea of running for president, #Kanye2020, his platform was not about Leftist resistance to Trump at all - in fact it looked a lot more like a Republican agenda. rollingstone.com/politics/news/…

In the summer of 1968, shortly after my father, #MLK, was assassinated, my mother, #CorettaScottKing, addressed @Harvard’s Class of 68. Her words concerning student/youth activism are powerful and relevant. Sharing excerpts from her message in this thread:
“In a power-drunk world, where means become ends, and violence becomes a favorite pastime, we are swiftly moving toward self-annihilation. Your generation must speak out with righteous indignation against the forces which are seeking to destroy us.” #CorettaScottKing

I did not expect the ending of #BlackPanther to hurt with Coates' almost nihilistic realism that I first felt at beginning of "Between the World and Me", but it did. That, the Tim Hardaway reference and Ryan Coogler's nod to Spike Lee's spinning dolly cam. 👌🏽🏆
I wish you could have been there for the opening in my neighbourhood with my son and I surround by other locals and heard the excitement from local aboriginal kids as the movie started. Their identification meant they shared in the representation and it moved me deeply.
With the release of #BlackPanther film I want to address some important but forgotten realities of the Black Panther Party (in 🇺🇸 & 🇦🇺) and confront some of the lies. The history has much to teach those of us committed to nonviolent organising for justice.

This is as awful as I expected.
From the message to the messenger - whose bio is no happenstance in the intended effect on the Fox News audience - this is shameful.
#MLK was a leader of a movement not for blind unity, but for true unity based on justice fulfilled. Justice.
My husband - who, yes, is black - has taken me on a privileged journey over our 18 years through my own ignorance. He comes from rural Louisiana and from a family that sharecropped and worked domestic jobs to invest in that one family member who might rise.
That one family member was my father-in-law, who went from one-room segregated school house to college and then law school on the aspirations and sacrifices of an entire community. And those aspirations? They were for bringing to reality the promise of full humanity.

"Lamentably, it is an historical fact that privileged groups seldom give up their privileges voluntarily. Individuals may see the moral light & voluntarily give up their unjust posture; but, as Niebuhr has reminded us, groups tend to be more immoral than individuals." #MLK
"Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. Frankly, I have yet to engage in a direct-action campaign that was “well timed” in the view of those who have not suffered unduly from the disease of segregation." #MLK #BirminghamJail
"For years I have heard the word “Wait!” It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity. This “Wait” has almost always meant ‘Never.” We must come to see, with one of our distinguished jurists, that “justice too long delayed is justice denied.” #MLK #BirminghamJail
