1/ Several provocative papers were published on #burnout last week in @JAMA_current. I have some thoughts on both the papers and the field. I hope these might stimulate further informed discussion. I will take part in that to the extent time permits, but I do have a day job. 😀
2/ First up, the systematic review by @LisaRotenstein @srijan_sen_lab @DouglasMataMD and others. Hearty congratulations for such a visible publication based on an immense amount of work! #burnout @JAMA_current jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
3/ Key findings include: “marked variation in burnout definitions, assessment methods, and study quality” which “preclude definitive conclusions about the prevalence of burnout”.

#Florence is finally moving away from the Carolinas (severe flooding still ongoing for several more days), and the long-term recovery process is beginning. It's important to keep in mind the psychological impacts of disasters on humans. (Thread)
Many people impacted by a disaster, especially those with direct experience, endure temporary distress after the event, which can take days or weeks to diminish.
Symptoms of temporary distress include trouble sleeping, becoming angry or upset more easily, problems at school or work, a sense of isolation, flashbacks or nightmares, and difficulty concentrating or listening.

.@SarahbaxterSTM's argues that #fibromyalgia, #mecfs, #lupus, #depression, self-harming and #anorexia are caused by female ambition and fragility.

What's c. 1880 is new again.

thetimes.co.uk/article/kirsty…
This is just so silly. In the 19th century, there was a panic in the medical profession (and among social commentators) about women becoming ill with neurological and "nervous" conditions because they were overworking their brains/nerves, which were naturally weaker than men's.
This “fact” was used to bolster the argument in favor of stopping women's formal education after age 16 and most certainly not letting them enroll in university.

1/ In case we needed more reasons for building better cities, the evidence is growing that #mentalhealth is significantly affected by #urbanplanning and #urbandesign ... whether for the better or the worse is up to us ...
2/ Exposure to natural light is linked to better sleep, reduced stress, and better work/school performance bit.ly/2ORgMiw. A well-designed city ensures access to natural light on sidewalks, in public spaces, and inside homes and offices.

#1: I have the right to ask for what I want.
You are allowed to ask. You don't have to mind-read beforehand to make sure the answer will be yes. You don't have to swallow everything you want or like or need. Sure, it's possible the answer will be "no," but you can prepare for that possibility. It's not wrong to ask.

No evidence: the drug wore off, he used a condom, she woke up confused and drove home after the humiliating conversation. They were friendly the day before and she accepted his offer to stay over instead of taking the road so late. No witnesses. The perfect #crime. #FicFri
Overdose survived. She flirted with him until he invited her over again. She denied him nothing in bed, she was #obsequious. “I’ve got a surprise”, she said, and massaged his feet as he sipped the wine she gave him. He died of sepsis a week later. #vss365 #AmWriting

I did the most #ADHD thing the other day. I took one pill then got distracted + took another, so ended up wired when one dose makes me like a "normal" person. I'm coming out as ADHD now after building a record of hard work bc there's stigma. Lmk if you have qs about pros and cons
I'm in good company with Michael Phelps and Einstein 🙂. Basically even without meds I'm able to hyperfocus on what I'm interested in accomplishing but if you ask me to do something boring I'll be incredibly inept. healthline.com/health/adhd/be…
Also #ADHD is linked with higher sensitivity to things like bright lights, sounds and textures. I was only diagnosed a few years ago and just thought before that knit turtlenecks were a medieval torture device.

Malam raya ni tiba2 rasa nak membadai pasal #depression
Mmg niat tu baik by posting suicide prevention hotline numbers and to reach out and all. You want to raise awareness? Ok boleh. Tapi please stop giving bad and unhelpful mental health advice.
Korang lancar je sebut about OCD or bipolar when you mean "organized" and "moody". Itu pun kau tak reti bezakan.

How can I explain #mystory to people who think #depression is sadness and #PTSD is something only war veterans get? Normal people rely on their moods being stable, their thoughts being their own, their long-term plans coming along in satisfying stages./1
Now pretend you get kidnapped, randomly, every few weeks. You’re dumped back into your life and have to somehow pick up where you left off. It takes time. Sometimes you’re just getting oriented when it happens again./2
Sometimes you go a long time without getting kidnapped, and your life is going really well, getting a lot done, and you think you’ll never get kidnapped again. Then one day, you do. For two weeks. /3

Y'all know I have a lot of feelings so today is a lot. I've never been suicidal but it's all important to talk about. My diagnosis journey has been long and I've always been compelled to try lots of options and STILL felt a sense of defeat when I did find the answer (thread)
Like damn, how many years could I have had back I'd known earlier. I've always been intense. I like to perform, have a mouth on me, and enjoy making people laugh but have crippling anxiety and have experienced waves of depression before I even knew that's what they were.
I hit the worst wall after college and a breakup, cranking wayyyyy too hard through school not realizing what was going on. I am extremely fortunate that I had to capacity to tell my boss something was wrong with me when I could barely get myself to work, much less go an

1/ If u have played the game the way I have, this clip is not that difficult to break down. Notice Wilson’s right skate before or at the initial point of contact. It is leaving the ice intentionally, which means he thrusts his body into an upward direction, which is towards the
2/ head of Reese. If we look at the left skate during the point of contact, Wilson is rising up onto his toe, as if he is trying to jump, hence the reason he ended up sitting on the dasher of his own bench after the hit. It is clear that Reese sees Wilson coming but that has very
3/ little to do with the fact that Wilson clearly makes contact with the head/jaw of Reese, in direct result of jumping and thrusting his body in an upward motion. Bc of this, we have a human being who may get the right diagnosis of a #concussion yet will he receive the treatment

10-20% of pregnant women experience depression and/or anxiety during the perinatal period. (peri=around, natal=birth). #MaternalMHMatters #PerinatalMentalHealth
Maternal prenatal stress has been associated with a range of negative outcomes in the baby.. such as obstetric outcomes (e.g. preterm birth, low birth weight), emotional outcomes, behavioural outcomes and cognitive outcomes. Review: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
The biological basis for this is still poorly understood. More research is needed in this area to help identify early markers (as well as protective factors) and to help inform early interventions to ensure the best possible outcome for the mother and the baby.

Borderline Personality Disorder aka Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder is one of the most misunderstood, stigmatised & complex mental health diagnoses (Thread) #BPD #EUPD

One could write pages relating to the condition BPD and a layman’s understanding would still be incomplete. For this reason I am going to try and keep it short, simple and concise as I can and explain to you what BPD is to me.
BPD is intense feelings of loneliness & an inability to sit with myself without resorting to poor coping behaviours #BPD #EUPD #MentalHealthAwareness

Fell into a 90s/00s #suicide anthem music loop this afternoon and it reminded me of how depressed I have been in the past and how depressed I am now, again, and how much we still don't discuss #depression in this society.
#DepressionIsReal

I wrote this a couple years ago.
It's a good piece on writers & suicide, with an emphasis on #LGBT suicides because we kill ourselves more (thanks #homophobia/#transphobia)than str8 people.

Society still romanticizes #depression instead of treating it.

Many people are living with #depression and are not aware of it.

"I know that something is wrong but I'm not sure what it is"

"I think I'm just tired. I should be fine after a short holiday"

They continue through life on auto-pilot
Then you get the people that are living with #depression and are fully aware of it BUT have chosen to deal with it in their own way

"I know exactly what the problem is but I'm not going to see a psychiatrist/psychologist"

"I'm going to pray about it"
The challenge with #depression is the fact that it is caused by a chemical imbalance. There is a neurotransmitter in the brain that is in short supply. That neurotransmitter needs to be replenished

This is why I want to #MAGA. #Family.

1. My mom and dad, married 61 years. Both raised in the coalfields of #WV. My dad is LTC-USA (RET), served in #Vietnam, and is 100% VA disabled. My mom raised 3 daughters pretty much by herself!

Where is the #America they loved?
2. My son, pictured here with his father. He served in the #USArmy, and due to his service, is 100% VA disabled. (He suffers from #PTSD and thus, #depression, and, sadly, #addiction.)

Will the #VA be there for him when he's old?
3. My daughter, here with me at her bridal shower. She's an elementary school #teacher, and works 12-hour days, making sure her students get the very best education possible.

Will she be forced to tell her students they can't say Merry Christmas?

Doctors are no longer a driving part of the #OpioidHysteria. They never really were. Why why why are we still getting these stories instead of what’s really going on? Alt facts much? How very Trumpian. News media needs to take a good look in the mirror & start facing the truth.
Define “overprescribing” please. 91 ppl per day die from overdoses: from what exactly? Which meds? Multiple meds or just Opioids? God I’m fucking tired of this whole bs narrative still going on.
How about the painful stories of vulnerable ppl -disabled-Veterans-elderly- being cut off from #opioids & committing suicide b/c their pain is so bad?? #SuicideDue2Pain #PainKills
