I’m a suicide survivor. I have survived multiple attempts, most before I went into treatment, and one due to my mishandling a med change (my fault). Very few people know this, so it will cause a stir in my community, but it’s important for me to tell my story. #SuicidePrevention

I tried twice durning my teens and once in my 30’s. I’m “out of the closet” with my mental health, even talking to my students about it, but I don’t talk about this with anyone. I don’t talk about it because people have zero idea how to respond.

It’s a conversation killer, talk about bringing the party down. I would not even know where to begin, and so I don’t. My wife knows, my doctors know, but I don’t think anyone else does. So, this will come as a shock to some and will make others angry and for that, I’m sorry.

I’m speaking out now because it’s the most powerful statement I can make about getting help. See, I was not in control when I decided to die, by depression was. Death was the better alternative to life, it hurt that much. But there is light at the end of that long dark tunnel.

With proper treatment and therapy, it’s possible to regain the upper hand on mental illness, which is what I did. I follow my med schedule religiously, I go to therapy, I talk to my wife. I fight the battle every single minute of the day, but I have weapons now, and I win.

If you are in despair then fight back. Life is the better choice. Every day is a gift that I gave myself and I treasure them, each and every one. Get help and follow the path set for your recovery. Your life is worth fighting for.
