Let's talk about suicide. I know it's not fun. But we need to talk about it. I am someone with lived experience. I've lived through those moments when it was almost too much to bear and I searched for methods and wrote out plans. Yet I am still here.

I'm glad I'm alive. There have been plenty of days when I didn't feel that way. So it's kind of like a gift. Part of the beauty in this is that I know other people are glad I'm here, too. Probably none of them knows how difficult the journey has been.

Depression is a monster that lives under your bed, crawls out every morning as you eat breakfast, watches from the mirror as you brush your teeth, talks in your ear like a ceaseless prayer in reverse as you try to go about your day.

I will struggle with mental illness and suicide for the rest of my life. It isn't easy, it's painful. I get tired, I get frustrated and I struggle but I'm also braver, stronger, wiser, patient and compassionate. I've learned to thrive and live with purpose.

I’m a suicide survivor. I have survived multiple attempts, most before I went into treatment, and one due to my mishandling a med change (my fault). Very few people know this, so it will cause a stir in my community, but it’s important for me to tell my story. #SuicidePrevention
I tried twice durning my teens and once in my 30’s. I’m “out of the closet” with my mental health, even talking to my students about it, but I don’t talk about this with anyone. I don’t talk about it because people have zero idea how to respond.
It’s a conversation killer, talk about bringing the party down. I would not even know where to begin, and so I don’t. My wife knows, my doctors know, but I don’t think anyone else does. So, this will come as a shock to some and will make others angry and for that, I’m sorry.

Being an entrepreneur comes with a sense of freedom & none of the institutional limits on creativity. Yet unless I'm consulting within an organisation or connected to community, it can feel lonely & isolating. Online communities are great for support but it's not enough.
I've seen the negative effects of people investing all their time/energy in networking online & draining group dynamics. I realised that one of my values is to participate in collaborations that involve physical meet ups or at least in the potential of physical meetups. 2/
What can I say? I derive inspiration from in person experiences. So it's not surprising that I notice changes in my thinking patterns & emotional landscape when my interactions are more virtual than physical. It's de-motivating & raises mental health alarm bells 3/
