How many of us heard about Dhulagarh before December 2016? Even many Bengalis outside Howrah District may not have heard about this place before. I didn’t. Its a small industrial & business hub in Howrah.

Before the infamous riot it was mostly a quiet place where both Hindus & Muslims lived side by side, some stray incidents of communal clashes did happen in past which quickly subdued.

#ThisDayInHistory #DhulagarhRiots However in December 2016 things went from bad to worst! Things went out of control. In oct’2016 during Muharram a riot was seen in Naihati. Just a few months before this another such rampage was witnessed in Kaliachak, Malda, WB.

#ThisDayInHistory #DhulagarhRiots About an year n half ago another such riot was seen in Nadia during May 2015. In 2013 there was a huge riot in Canning area south of Kolkata. All were communal. In September 2010 there was a huge violent communal riot in Deganga, near Kolkata.

Bengal has been a hotbed for communal riots since ages, right from the islamic invasion. There has been numerous incidents of temples destruction, conversion, loot, rape, arson, massacre, carnage on bengalis.

In the era of Hussain Shah there was some restriction on hindu processions of Idols, samkirtan etc. But he was the only sultan under whom Hindus were less persecuted n enjoyed much more religious freedom.

during the British rule the carnage went a step ahead with passive support from the incumbent governments. in the last century there has been a series of such atrocities in the undivided Bengal region.

Asansol & Kashipur riots in 1939, Dhaka riots in 1941, Great Calcutta Killings ( Direct Action day) 1946, Noakhali riots 1946. After independence in WB we saw Calcutta riots 1964, marichjhapi massacre 1979, ananda Margi massacre 1982, 1992 Calcutta riot.

DURING T HE cpm rule it was predominantly political violence across WB, the naxalite movement, Sainbari, Nandigram massacres all were of political marxist induced violence.

Didi’s penchant for dismissing communal incidents as “small matters’ has only emboldened the criminals & subdued the authorities. If she had allowed the police to enforce law & order firmly & evenly, everyone would have praised her.

The criticism that CM plays minority card would have also subsided. But to gain narrow political mileage she has completely failed to learn anything from dhulagarh or bashirhat & baduria.

Didi should also understand that appeasement is never beneficial. Thats why there is no Kazi Nazrul Islam born again in WB. All it does is to create frankensteins like Barkati & Naseer sheik.

They not only mislead their people but also deceive & betray them. Forcefully leading them to the path of fundamentalism & fanatism. Kolkata is going to be the next Dhulagarh
