A new piece from me: On the story about race in the midterms few are talking about: Not Stacey Abrams or Andrew Gillum, but how the GOP has nominated their whitest slate of Governor's candidates in years. nytimes.com/2018/10/03/us/… Republicans used to have a more diverse gubernatorial bench than Democrats in recent years, with people like Jindal, Haley, Sandoval, and Martinez. Now, after this midterms, the party's roster threatens to be all-white, and overwhelmingly male

My kind of petty: Democrat running for House seat in Arizona gets six of his Republican opponent's SIBLINGS to be in an advertisement against their brother Update: I got an email from David Gosar, one of the brother's featured in the video. He wants me to tweet this statement, and I'll oblige (1/4)

New: NYT is taking stock after a hectic primary season. I talked with campaign managers, candidates, and strategists from the biggest progressive upsets to come up with connecting threads 1/5
nytimes.com/2018/09/15/us/… The candidate: Obviously minority candidates have been more successful, but it's more than that. It's creating a narrative of life experiences that is not only inspiring, but matches that of the district

Huge news from St. Louis County: With 90% of precincts reporting, Ferguson Council member Wesley Bell is now 10 points ahead of St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McColluch, who handled Mike Brown-Darren Wilson investigation.

Criminal justrice reform may be coming to Ferugson I asked Bell what he would do differently from in cases of police shootings, he promised three things: 1) A special prosecutor to avoid conflicts of interest 2) new data collection to share with residents 3) increased transparency

Hi from the Whitmer watch party in the #MIGOV race. Early results only but if Abdul El-Sayed was looking to replicate Bernie map from 2016 presidential primary -- things are going to have to change. Whitmer up big in Clinton County with 40% of precincts in. Bernie won by 13 pts welp

My latest: In one of the whitest Congressional districts, a black candidate's past life as a rapper is taking center stage. “Is a guy who makes a rap album the kind of guy who lives here in rural New York and reflects our lifestyle and values?” one asked nytimes.com/2018/07/17/us/… Rapping under "AD the Voice," the now-candidate used the "n-word" and referred to some of the founding fathers as believers in white supremacy. Now, his Republican opponent is trying those lyrics, and rap itself, are "inconsistent" with the district

Be skeptical in moments like this. Yes, you'll get harsh statements from Hill Republicans, and maybe even some prominent Trumpers disavowing the president. But like in shocking moments of the past, many soon realize the Republican base remains behind him and end up crawling back We often ask what Congressional Rs will do about Trumps latest shocker, which is valid, but also ignores that politicians are largely acting in accordance w/ what they think the base cares abt. And until base voters come see that presser as shocking, I wouldn't expect much change

A supremely specific pet peeve of mine is when local media writes about law enforcement's "community engagement" events purely from the perspective of law enforcement, and does not include voices from the community meant to be engaged The origin of this v focused annoyance is that growing up cops used to come to our house kind of frequently, because we had a basketball court where teens (yes, black teens) would gather. They'd ask to play and we'd have to say yes ofc, and they'd sometimes write about it after

One of the biggest divides in politics right now isn't Democrat/Republican, but a polite political class in Washington that prioritizes things like civility and optics in a way an increasingly enraged public does not And in the same way members of that political class, which includes professional Ds/Rs/and media, were among the last to recognize the rage that was driving Trump through 2016, the civility fetish blinds some to fully understanding the anger Trump has ignited in response

This is, quite literally, the most oft-repeated talking point of America's white nationalist movement Already wrote abt this: the political center is only now becoming increasingly vocal about Trump’s relationship with white nationalists, but two groups have long identified this connection: "scholars in racial politics — and white supremacists themselves."

Hi everyone! I'm at the Turning Points USA Young Women's conference this weekend in Dallas, TX. Dr. Jordan Peterson is about to speak on a panel with Charlie Kirk, I'll live tweet some quotes here Before him was Jennifer Grossman of Atlas Society/Marissa Streit of Prager, who talked abt "decline of femininity"

"When someone compliments you, say thank you," -- Streit

I've haven't seen "so many gorgeous women under one roof since Harvey Weinstein's arraignment" -- Grossman
