Right -

I need to say something. This upsetting piece is far more the fault of the @MetroUK than it is of @Jacob_Rees_Mogg.

Regardless of my feelings toward Rees-Mogg & his policies, this is irresponsible journalism.

Allow me to explain in a thread: The article accurately quotes Rees-Mogg and accurately attributes the quote to this letter (relevant page below) from Rees-Mogg to Andrew Adonis.

See paragraph 2.

That in itself is an alarming statement, but what is it in response to?

Argh! @BBCr4today talking crap about why we have “huge tariffs” on “African countries” & whether we can lower tariffs.

This is ignorant. 33 African countries have ZERO tariffs to EU - coz they fall under “Everything But Arms” agreement.

#BBClaziness

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everythin… Also, on top of this the EU has various deals with African regions in development, aimed at helping Africa integrate into global trading system (EU is Africa’s biggest trading partner)

Here’s the West Africa deal- incl Nigeria where May’s been visiting:

The usually impressive Yanis Varoufakis doesn’t hold up well in the comments section beneath.

Respecting a public verdict does not mean you remove future public verdicts. That’s disempowerment. And he is also plain wrong about mechanisms.

I encourage him to talk to us also. I also am a democrat who respected the result.

In my case, that meant writing plans for UK-EU science post-Brexit (published academically & shared with Govt).

However, I also always maintained that if public don’t like where Brexit is going, they retain right to pull the plug.

John Redwood absolutely caught red-handed on TV over his support for “double referendum” - wait until the end.

In fact, Dominic Cummings and Vote Leave publicly flirted with a Double Referendum.

Here was his thinking: Basically, that you get more moderates voting ‘No’ to EU if they thought that meant stopping status quo & having new deal on which they cld vote:

“I have been concerned at the continued attempts to refight the referendum and put the Leave campaigns in the dock,” writes @GregHands

Well I’m far more concerned that politicians should wish criminal actions to be ignored... for political expediency.

thetimes.co.uk/article/we-nee… And I also note this piece is copy-paste from The @Telegraph two days earlier... but with a title change.

That’s not usual practice, is it @thetimes?

I am *done* with the @BBC.

They report on Vote Leave breaking the law... then give the last word on it to: Vote Leave.

And not just a snippet quote.

The last SIX paragraphs are all Vote Leave‘s words under the title “Motivated by political agenda”

bbc.com/news/uk-politi… And here it is. How the @BBC choose to end their news report on Vote Leave breaking the law...

... by giving Vote Leave six paragraphs of unchallenged text to undermine the Electoral Commission & present their own obvious spending breaches as political victimisation. FFS

Doesn’t matter what % of global trade happens outside the EU.

Or how much of the galaxy’s trade happens outside the EU

— it matters whether we do better trade deals with the rest of the world as the UK solo, or as part of the EU.

[thread] As it happens, with the EU, we’ve built more global trade deals than the US had, or China, or Switzerland, or Australia

— and because of the size of our market, we’ve been able to do those largely on our terms, keeping our high European standards.

We’ve been in the EU longer than 8 years...

Growing inequality is a failure of redistribution/re-investment at national level. Or are you giving the Tories a free pass on their 8 years of rule? And to those replying that he meant the EU did not stop the inequality...

Quite. That’s because we’re a sovereign nation. Being in the EU benefits a nation’s wealth - but it’s utterly up to the sovereign govt (democratically elected) what to do with that wealth.

Not sure I agree with that last line.

JC said meaningful vote on final deal. Labour has defined "meaningful vote" as can't be against "no deal". JC said Labour will not support deal that does lasting damage. Thus Labour set up path to block Brexit, if they wish, at the time. Now yes, I know that Corbyn was not overtly championing that. However, this option is Labour's official (oft-forgotten) line and it just got repeated here.

So even though Corbyn repeated that we are leaving... the weapons are being placed...

Everybody should write to the @BBCNews about this.

Steve Baker apologised for repeating Rees-Mogg’s civil service smears when they were proven false. BBC gladly repeats the smears as if true - with zip evidence. Where’s their sense of responsibility? Look at those titles. 👇🏻 Think of those hard-working public servants in the guts of our national machine... effortlessly slandered by the wave of a toff’s hand who doesn’t like the results.

And the @BBC duly nod & echo the aforementioned toff. Because he is important 🧐 and our public servants are not.

Redwood et al's letter: "deliberately deferring discussions on [trade]" - duh! It's called sequencing & the UK Govt agreed to it. 🤦🏻‍♂️ And here's page 2... which is frighteningly dangerous.

On radio @DamianGreen is irresponsibly repeating cliches immigrants depress wages & strain services. Immigrants bring net £ to benefit all. I'm getting very frustrated with politicians who should know better lazily peddling immigrant blame for political expediency.
