THEY DID IT!!! After Pennsylvania @MomsDemand volunteers worked to pass this bill to disarm domestic abusers for over three years, it is finally headed to the governor’s desk to sign it into law. How did we do it? @MomsDemand delivered an open letter to Pennsylvania lawmakers in the House signed by over 7,600 Pennsylvanians. We drove tens of thousands of calls and digital messages to lawmakers urging them to support #HB2060.

Trump to woman reporter: "She's shocked I picked her, she's in a state of shock”
Reporter: “I'm not, thank you Mr. President”
Trump: "I know you're not thinking, you never do”
Reporter: "I'm sorry?"
Trump: "Go ahead"

This is institutionalized misogyny.

More. Trump shouts down a different woman reporter as she tries to ask him a question about Kavanaugh.

“Don’t do that. That’s not nice,” Trump tells her while wagging his finger.

Here's how @Everytown and @MomsDemand are gearing up for the midterms. First, we recently announced a first wave of targeted spending of up to $10M in four critical states: Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and New Mexico.

washingtonpost.com/national/gun-c… .@MomsDemand has given out Gun Sense Candidate distinctions to over 3,000 candidates in 48 states. And @Everytown has endorsed dozens of volunteers and gun violence survivors up and down the ballot. They're also endorsing gun sense champions in key races across the country.

Based on what we already know, the judicial record of Brett Kavanaugh shows he has applied a dangerous interpretation of #2A when determining whether a law is constitutional, and demonstrates an extreme view of the Second Amendment that elevates gun rights over public safety. Kavanaugh made it clear he'd strike down prohibitions on assault-style weapons. He dissented from a decision upholding D.C.’s ban on assault-style weapons and its requirement to register handguns. The dissent put him at odds with every other appeals court to address the issue.

He gave this speech the same day a U.S. Attorney in Massachusetts arrested a Trump supporter for threatening to fatally shoot journalists. According to reports, the FBI searched the suspect's California home and seized 20 guns, both long guns and handguns, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

.@NRA's Dana Loesch making a good case for strengthening the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Onus currently on gun buyers to inform sellers if they've been committed. And too many state records are incomplete or missing: everytownresearch.org/reports/fatal-… More on NICS in a second, but to correct Dana's tweet re Maryland:
Seven day waiting period, but one gun purchase per month
No background checks required for long guns

Jacksonville shooter wasn’t a convicted felon. He didn’t have a history of illegal drug use. He’s not a fugitive. He hadn’t been convicted of domestic abuse. So only question remaining is if he was adjudicated mentally ill or involuntarily committed for mental health treatment. If his mental health treatment was voluntary, the shooter’s only criminal offense before pulling the trigger may have been taking his gun across state lines - something the @NRA wants legalize via Concealed Carry Reciprocity, a bill currently winding its way through Congress.

Why? Because gun manufacturers are in the hole at least $100 million since Trump’s election. The @NRA can’t scare Americans by saying the President is going to take away their guns, so they have to arm 3.6M teachers to put money back in their coffers. nytimes.com/2018/08/22/us/… America’s teachers aren’t given enough money to buy school supplies, yet the Trump Administration wants to use use taxpayer dollars to buy them guns. The solution to school shootings isn’t arming teachers; it’s passing laws to keep guns away from dangerous people.

This week, after pushback all summer from Ohio @momsdemand volunteers, Hamilton school district officials reversed their plan to arm teachers and other school staff. The decision by the Hamilton Board of Education was unanimous. wcpo.com/news/local-new… Arming teachers has not been shown to improve school safety. In fact, arming teachers ignores research that shows having access to a gun increases the risks posed to children, which is why teachers and law enforcement largely oppose this dangerous policy.

For those of you who adore Rick Wilson, he thinks @NRA "volunteers" are more committed and passionate than @MomsDemand volunteers. Rick doesn't realize that when we show up at statehouses, it's dozens or hundreds of us versus one NRA lobbyist. See you in November... And if you’re talking about voter turnout, please see the 2017 Virginia elections. @MomsDemand helped elect the Governor, Lt Governor, AG, and swept the House of Delegates. The @NRA lost in their own backyard despite investing $2 million. And gun violence was top 3 voting issue.

Doug Lamborn, an A-rated @NRA lawmaker who has taken tens of thousands of dollars from the gun lobby. But she can only win IF YOU HELP HER: stephanyroseforcongress.com Born on Chicago’s Southside, Stephany moved to Colorado to be a professor at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. She's also the Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Stephany decided to run for office after attending the Women’s March in Washington, DC.

BREAKING: The Florida gunman who fatally shot a man over a parking spot dispute has been the accused aggressor in four road rage incidents. One involved the same Clearwater parking spot, one involved a shooting threat, and during two he showed a gun. tampabay.com/news/publicsaf… In this case, the shooter was white and the victim was Black. Stand Your Ground disproportionately impacts communities of color in Florida. Florida Stand Your Ground cases are half as likely to lead to a conviction when the victim is a minority.

As we wrap up #GSU18, I want to thank the 1,000+ volunteer leaders - including 300+ gun violence survivors - from 47 states and DC, who attended. Just 5 years ago, I skyped with 5 women trying to figure out how we could build @MomsDemand. As of last week, we are 5 million strong. Because this movement is powered by love. The @NRA says criminals will never follow laws, except when it comes to ghost guns. Got it.

#StopDownloadableGuns The @NRA knows federal law isn't good enough, given the development of modern technologies, and they have resisted strengthening it. In addition, Cody Wilson designed his signature gun to make it easy to defeat the law.

“I don't make the law. I enforce the law," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said during a news conference today. "The law in Florida is that people have a right to stand their ground and defend themselves when they believe they are in harm." #flapol abcnews.go.com/US/gunman-park… Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law allows residents to use force, including deadly force, if they "reasonably believe" they are at risk of death or great bodily harm. The law specifies that people have "no duty to retreat" from their homes or vehicles if they feel threatened.

Reminder: In 2011, then-@NRA president David Keene began a close friendship with Alexander Torshin when Torshin was deputy director of the Russian Central Bank. That same year, Torshin began building a pro-gun movement in Russia with the help of Maria Butina. Butina has since claimed to be a go-between between the Trump campaign and Russia. For years, Torshin and Butina traveled to the U.S. to meet with top @NRA officials, while NRA leaders traveled to Russia, including meetings with Torshin, Butina and a sanctioned Russian official.

BREAKING: For over a year, the Florida Dept of Agriculture failed to conduct background checks on tens of thousands of concealed weapons permit applications. As Commissioner of Agriculture, this failure should end @adamputnam’s gubernatorial campaign and career TODAY. #flapol .@adamputnam’s office was unable to log into the system to perform background checks during the biggest spike in permit applications in Florida’s history. As a result, criminals may have received Florida permits to carry hidden, loaded handguns in public.
