Thank you so much for your ideas, suggestions, and pointers (for the ones already made and those that are still coming in)! I'm a bit overwhelmed but certainly delighted there has been so much interest, and I will definitely make sure to tweet students' work when it's complete.
I'm borrowing this idea from @JeremyJierong, who co-wrote with a student about their class' experience of writing Wikipedia entries. Helping students make their work mean something in the world is very appealing, and has lots of pedagogical potential. historians.org/publications-a…
Okay, so here's the reality. Native people struggle financially, not all, but a good deal of us. We have jobs, own business, go to school, have families, have disabilities and needs that just aren't being met because of the unpredictability of life.
Last year, I was happy because I had done it. I had broken the cycle of poverty, i was finally making money from my work, bills were paid, i had everything I needed and I was happy because I was also able to give back financially as well.
Then boom...in September of last year, I went from being happy and secure to being homeless, to losing everything.....except myself, a suitcase and two dufflebags of clothing.
#NativeTwitter hit the ❤ button if you have ever spoken up on Indigenous issues and had your identity as a Native person erased and ignored by Non-Native folx who instead deem you a "Liberal", "Democrat" or "SJW" to invalidate you.
I don't know about the rest of you in #NativeTwitter but having my indigeneity ignored to be called a "democrat", "liberal", "SJW", or "snowflake" makes me feel really icky....like "Bitch, I'm Indigenous from Nations older than America...stop trying to make me White.
When I speak up, I am not doing so because of indoctrinated political identity or propaganda. I am doing so cuz that B.S. is harmful and toxic to my people's existence and the policies & actions of gov. entities is harming not just my people but other folx residing on these lands
😂😂😂 @WilliamShatner crying over a racist & anti-Native white woman's name being stripped from an award, defending his own Anti-Native behavior when called out for using "Injun", & remaining silent while his white fanbase follows his lead in denigrating Native people........
And then he plays the victim by blocking Native people speaking up and trying to educate his old ass..... @WilliamShatner is such a disappointment but his behavior is so typical. Good job #NativeTwitter for doing your thing and letting these assholes expose their true colors.
