Twitter and other #SoMe are a fecund source of examples of scientific illiteracy.
There are a lot of people whose understanding of science entails two opponents slinging examples at each other. Examples of papers, websites, news articles that were cherry-picked to confirm a view
Antivax vs vax, climate change deniers vs agreers, etc.

They start with an opinion, then look for confirmatory evidence.
They think that this is how science is done, and that"looking for evidence" is the essence of science.

Mostly what it does is entrench false beliefs, bias
This is partly caused by straight forward ignorance of science and lack of training in research techniques, but also fed by the myth of the "lone genius"

In this view, a rugged individual is the only font of knowledge, and the epitome of science rigor is solitary research

when I turn the lantern almost all the way off, it emits a blue-red glow from the mantles barely being warmed by the short blue flames inside. when the wind gusts, it flickers to yellow life briefly.

just now one side went out and was relit by the other with a small "fump"

1/n #Tweetorial: As an Assistant PD for @OHSUIMRes focused on scholarship, #medtwitter, & #hcsm (health care social media), I’m often guide residents and colleagues on how to best use Twitter for academics, networking, learning, etc...
2/n recently, while welcoming newbies (esp students) and “onboarding” them to #medtwitter & #hcsm, I was asked to put together advice for IM applicants on how to best use social media during application/interview season. I think this advice is applicable beyond IM, too.

Q2. Content is key in #SoMe! Where do you find it? How do you keep up a daily content feed? #behavioralmedchat
A2. I post what I read. I don’t go out looking just for something to post. I also don’t post everything I read---I will post it if it seems like others could be interested or if I want to save it for later or both! #behavioralmedchat
A2. I try to keep the emotional valence of my content balanced, so if I’ve been hammering away at an issue that is a problem, I try to be mindful of that and be sure to also shine a light on things that are super cool and exciting. #behavioralmedchat

Tired of fighting the #antivaxxers on Twitter? Need some help in responding to their unsubstantiated claims and nonsense? Feel free to use this thread, or add your own comments. Be warned: it contains some crazy shit. And cursing. #wildride #VaccinesWork
I’ve asked several #antivaxxers for 1 peer-reviewed research study that supports their claim that vaccines cause autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Most never respond but some @ me a list of "studies" they claim make this link. For fun I started to read…

This is my commentary on #twitter #movements. Before I go I want to preface this with a statement: I love humans. We're amazing creative & powerful beings. I'm fascinated by human behaviour and the hidden motivations underlying our basic need to belong. 1/
I've observed some movements taking off on Twitter. Some for #MedEd, raising awareness, knowledge sharing, inspiration and sharing failings, wounds & triumphs. Generally they support creative expression in 280 characters. Awesome! 2/
As these movements gain momentum, more people want to join in b/c #belonging. I'm seeing a disturbing trend of sharing experiences of patients/clients to promote how deep & human they are. Some are purely intended, some not. 3/
