PARTICLES FOR JUSTICE IS LIVE! I am proud to be a co-author on this statement from high energy physicists:

particlesforjustice.org
"We write here first to state, in the strongest possible terms, that the humanity of any person, regardless of ascribed identities such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, religion, disability, gender presentation, or sexual identity is not up for debate."
"Belittling the ability and legitimacy of scientists of color and white women scientists using such flimsy pretexts is disgraceful, and it reveals a deep contempt for more than half of humanity that clearly comes from some source other than scientific logic."

#BlackandSTEM chat Q1: people think that my identity is an appropriate topic for discussion in scientific spaces. Like, did I say I wanted to discuss which parent is Jewish? Also if you're surprised I'm Black because I'm light skinned I DO NOT CARE TO KNOW THAT.
#BlackandSTEM chat Q2: white scientists need to stop feeling entitled to treat scientists of color as specimens
#BlackandSTEM chat Q3: I think whenever something like this happens, it's fine to do what you gotta do to protect your career, but make sure you have a conversation with yourself later about how wrong that person was and how it's not your fault.

the fact that mainstream pubs publish poetry like this is why publications like the offing are necessary thenation.com/article/how-to/
I laughed nervously and also literally had a convulsion in my abdomen like I might throw up when I read this poem
Here is a piece that several mainstream publications passed on but which I loved so much that I begged the writer to let me publish it. This is why The Offing is necessary. theoffingmag.com/insight/the-bo…

Now @bbeckford000 shows how hard core #BlackandSTEM are: he went from giving an expert talk and Q&A about diversity in physics to now giving an expert talk about particle physics. Here he is prepping. Black physicists are 200% physicists.
Pions and neutrinos production at KOTO. Importantly for Chanda: the axion mass * coupling constant is proportional to the pion mass * coupling constant. 😍 #BlackandSTEM
Show your kids: that’s a Black man talking about looking for unusual particle interactions — Dr. Brian Beckford of the University of Michigan #BlackandSTEM

Now a talk on physics in Africa from Azwinndini Muronga #BlackandSTEM #ICHEP2018
He starts by situating how we should think about “diversity” in context — and he argues for the need to create safe spaces #ICHEP2018
African youth are almost 1/5 of the world’s youth. What does it mean for *humanity* that #BlackandSTEM are excluded from science on the continent and globally? #ICHEP2018

Here we go, strategies for improving diversity (in an American context) from @bbeckford000 #ICHEP2018
Brian is beginning by highlighting that underrepresented minority and minority are not interchangeable. URMs don’t earn degrees commensurate with presence in US population.

I don’t know why this tweet amused me. Maybe because I’m at the diversity session of #ICHEP2018, a conference on particle physics where I gave a talk about ... particle physics, being a person who has nothing to do with STEM lol
Actually turns out I was in the wrong room. I knew there were too many white men and not enough women in the room lololol
The only men at the diversity session so far are the ones who are speaking or chairing it LMAO YAY PARTICLE PHYSICS
