Re: #Oscars. Yes, the Oscars was originally designed by the film studios as free publicity for themselves and as a way to bring in more moviegoers and get more press. The origins aren't that different from any other awards show (People's Choice or Golden Globes or whatever)
(This isn't unique to film. Joseph Pulitzer was a tabloidist who literally helped create what we now know as yellow journalism -- and along with William Randolph Hearst basically created clickbait and "fake news" -- but the Pulitzer Prize is still highly esteemed for good reason)
Over the last NINETY-YEARS, #Oscars and AMPAS has created the standard for film awards. Even when categories were overly expanded (up to 10 nominees) or added (Best Animated Feature) or major changes happened (Best Original Song), this is the gold standard.

This year, @Remezcla was credentialed to cover the #Oscars for the 1st time. It felt meaningful to have a presence there in a year that saw so much LatAm talent celebrated. It felt even more meaningful that our DACAmented correspondent @Carlos_Film could rep for DREAMers tonight.
But I'd like to point out that Remezcla wouldn't have been at the Oscars at all if a Latina Academy voter hadn't fought on our behalf. After our credential application was initially rejected, she advocated for our inclusion as an outlet and got us in the door.
This is an increasingly common struggle for outlets like ours. All too often, we're bypassed by Anglo publicists and predominantly white institutions in favor of more "mainstream" outlets.

Resumimos 👇🏼
26 febrero. Lunes. Golpe a Trump.

There will be a quick #MusicSermon before the #Oscars tonight. Probably 6ish, but I’ll confirm soon ⛪️.
In the meantime, check the current leaderboard for the first round of our 90s R&B #MarchMadness. Round 1 ends Tuesday @ 12ET.

We’ll get started on tonight’s #MusicSermon in a few. It’s *should* be one we can finish by the time the #Oscars start, but if not we’ll rock until 8 and I’ll finish later. Please govern yourselves accordingly. ⛪️

Today begins Women's History Month, and @eiwhalen threw down a challenge to #twitterstorians to tweet daily about a woman who made history.

So here begins my thread for the month -- others, please join in!
3/1: In class today I taught Charles Payne's extraordinary _I've Got the Light of Freedom_ so I'll start with ELLA BAKER, the grassroots community organizer with the NAACP, SCLC, & SNCC, who fought the freedom struggle by tirelessly teaching participatory democracy.
The Civil Rights Movement would have been very different & likely less effective, without her work. Ms. Baker didn't have much faith in charismatic leaders or centralized institutions, but faith in communities learning how to to collectively advocate their interests.
