Time to talk about women's reproductive health and dispel a few myths. I'm not one for long threads, so bear with me here. I have a lot of thoughts on this.

The main thing I think gets lost in partisan rhetoric is that we ALL want there to be fewer abortions. But how?
2) Let's start with a universal truth.

πŸ”₯Making abortions illegal does not make them less common.πŸ”₯

dailykos.com/stories/2018/3… Abortion rates are not lower in places where it is illegal.
Just in case you thought this was an American phenomena.

It's not.

Other countries have learned the hard way that punitive measures don't work.

economist.com/international/… Abortion is as common in countries where it is illegal as it is where it is legal.
Indeed, the rates of unsafe abortion in places where it is illegal are heartbreaking.
Clearly, making abortion illegal didn't do much for these countries.

So what can we do?

economist.com/international/… South Korea had a 44% abortion rate despite it being illegal in 2005.In the Soviet Union the average woman would have 5 to 8 abortions in her lifetime.
Unsurprisingly, @PPFA does a lot to PREVENT abortions. And yet, the right loves to attack them. In fact, the vast majority of PP's work is reproductive health & prevention.

Which begs the question... Why does the right attack PP?

newyorker.com/news/daily-com… Abortion should be safe and rare.
Republicans LOVE abortion. I'm not even kidding. They love showing abhorrent pictures of dead babies to scare people into voting for them. Fear is their choice for #GOTV
Fear of:
They are ruled by fear.

slate.com/news-and-polit… Republicans use Roe V Wade to get out the vote.
While reading this @Slate article gave me hope, I have serious concerns. It's not 1990. The number of women who remember the days before #RoeVWade are fewer. I'm not sure the younger generation entirely understands the danger we are in.
slate.com/news-and-polit… Pro choicers out voted pro birthers in 1990.
But how DO we prevent abortions?
It might be a good idea now to look at what works. Colorado is leading the way here.
colorado.gov/pacific/cdphe/… Colorado successfully reduced their teen abortion rate by 64% with education and access to contraception.
Which brings us to our current situation. Will the #GOP get rid of Roe V Wade with their last judge pick & lose their #GOTV incentive? Or will they do what they've always done and lie to their base while chipping away at #WomensRights ?
It's hard to know
Take no chances

There are lot of considerations when evaluating the amendments on Florida's ballot this year. The League of Women Voters did some research and these are their recommendations.
Short thread.
Amendment 1 ❎

Oppose.Β The League has a position that β€œno tax sources or revenue should be specified, limited, exempted, or prohibited in the Constitution.”
Amendment 2 ❎
The league opposes 2 for the same reason as 1.

I find this very odd that the anti-muslim #GOP would want to put even more money into charter schools. But despite their rampant xenophobia, they seem to love mother #Russia
So I guess they are ok with Gulen charter schools in #Florida
Everyone has their price.
This amendment will allow even more unregulated #CharterSchools
That means more of these...πŸ™„

guleninvestigation.com/floridas-coup-… Florida imports unqualified teachers from Turkey for taxpayer funded charter schools.
The state of Georgia is getting rid of these corrupt schemes while #Florida is opening the floodgates.
Why? Nearly 40% of Florida politicians have financial interests in charter schools.πŸ˜’

A few years ago, I taught in a different school where I had many kids from El Salvador. One student in particular was quite troubled. I mean. He was a real pain in the butt. But I never sent him out of class because I'm not that kind of teacher.
But other teachers were having problems with him and he ended up on the assistant principal's almost every day. He was very disruptive in their classes. Finally, the guidance counselor got permission to share his story.
It turns out that this boy hid under the bed while his mother was repeatedly raped when he was 4 years old.
He witnessed his mother being raped.

I just wrote a letter to my congressmen using Democracy.io
It's interesting that the Democrat had the choice of using #GunControl for a topic.
For the two Republicans who pretend to represent me, I had to use #education as #GunReform wasn't an option.
1. My letter started with:
Even Justice Scalia agreed that the 2nd Amendment does not extend to military weapons in the hands of civilians. More guns in schools just means more shootings and more deaths.

2. I continued with:
For this reason, should it come to pass that guns will be put in schools, I will tender my resignation as a public school teacher in the state of Florida. A teacher in Parkland gave his life protecting his students.
