As it is #GoodFriday, I wanted to share a brief thread about my favourite moment in #Mengelberg's recording of the #Bach #StMatthewPassion.

It's the tiny arioso just before the famous aria 'Aus Liebe':

The moment I mean in particular happens near the end.

In response to Pilate's question 'What has he done to cause this uproar?', the soprano (representing the childlike Christian soul) has summed up all of Jesus' good deeds. She colours these beautifully according to the text.
The music intensifies, reaching a high point at the line 'he raised up the weary and grieving'. She (sung here by Jo Vincent) is expressing ardent love and thrilled admiration for Jesus' miraculous and benevolent deeds.

"Between 1880 to 1940, white Christians lynched nearly five thousand black men & women in a manner with obvious echoes of the Roman crucifixion of Jesus. Yet these 'Christians' did not see the irony or contradiction in their actions.”- James H. Cone, The Cross & The Lynching Tree
2. Just as Cone notes, "The conspicuous absence of the lynching tree in American theological discourse and preaching is profoundly revealing," so too is theological condemnation of racist police shootings also conspicuously missing—particularly in white churches.
3. But here's the truth: You can't talk about #GoodFriday with any kind of moral relevance—any understanding of how Christ's crucifixion occurs all around us—without discussing police shootings, without condemning the murder of black bodies by agents of the state.

c.2pm, #GoodFriday: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Suffocating to death, naked & in agony, he cries out for grace.
3pm, #GoodFriday: “It is completed!” The temple curtain is torn in two, the dead rise, and the centurion believes. Tetelestai.

Do you know My King, Jesus?
Allow me to introduce Him to you.

He's the King of the Jews.
He's the King of Israel.
He's the King of Righteousness.
He's the King of the Ages.
He's the King of Heaven.
He's the King of Glory.
He's the King of Kings, and He's the Lord of Lords.
That's my King. David said, "The Heavens declare the glory of God &
the firmament shows His handiwork." My King is sovereign. No means of measure can define His limitless love. No far seeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of His shoreless supply.
