1/ On this fine #LaborDay, here's a recap of some of our most impactful stories about work and workers.

We'll begin with shipbuilders. In 2017, @jennifergollan laid out how private companies with poor safety records keep winning gov't contracts. revealnews.org/article/deadly…
2/ Reporter @willCIR found a pattern endemic to the temp industry of racist, sexist and otherwise discriminatory hiring.

Some agencies even went so far as to use code words to refer to – and avoid hiring – people of color. revealnews.org/article/when-c…
3/ Working with @frontlinepbs, @KQED, @Univision and @UCBerkeleyIRP, @bmyeung uncovered an epidemic of rape and sexual assault committed against female janitors who work alone on the night shift. revealnews.org/nightshift/?ut…

Earlier this year, I introduced a new bill, the “Workers’ Freedom to Negotiate Act” to reform our broken labor laws & help the very workers we celebrate on #LaborDay to earn better wages.

This is especially important given the Trump Admin & GOP assault on worker rights & safety.
While President Trump promised to stand up for the working people in this country, his administration appears hell-bent on causing more harm to working families than good.

Here’s a few examples:

politico.com/story/2018/09/…

nytimes.com/2018/09/02/bus…

usatoday.com/story/news/pol…
President Trump’s rolling back much-needed reforms that keep workers safe, freezing pay for federal workers, or limiting the power of public sector unions will do nothing to help the working people in this country and instead only benefit the special interests and wealthiest.

A core proposition in #MMT is that we can always create whatever money is necessary to maintain a full employment economy. The Federal Reserve building is named after the Fed Chairman who made the same point in 1939. #MarrinerEccles
Here's Eccles--a businessman and a banker--calling B.S. on business leaders and their argument that tax cuts & deregulation would unleash a powerful (trickle-down) effect that would boost output and employment.
Here he is arguing that tax cuts should be aimed at the real job creators--consumers --especially low-income workers. For economic *and* social equity reasons.

It's #LaborDay weekend and all, so I'm gonna do a thread about a job listing I just saw.

I think it's depressing and on the dystopian side that this looks normal to lots of people. Let's unpack it together...

Have a song to read it with:

[1/15]
"We have 2 different opportunities- both in fast growing companies with lots of room for advancement! Hard workers rewarded! I need about 50 people. General Labor to start at $11-$12 an hour. Four shifts available starting 5:30, 6:30, 7:00 and 3:00(pm). Overtime available" [2/15]
This was posted by an individual, not an organizational account. There's a phone number to call, and that's it. There's no company name. There's no location mentioned. There is implication that this is some kind of job agency person with 2 separate requests to hire staff.[3/15]

▪Did you know that women comprise the majority of America's #minimumwage & #workingpoor workers?
▪Did you know K-12 teachers are 86% female & nearly all get working class pay despite degrees?

Since the 2016 election male politicians have talked about America's working class as if it was white men when it is women of all races.

Trump and Bernie Sanders speak to the disaffected white male worker, but it is women doing low-paid labor.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics and the US Census detail how even white collar professions like teacher, nurse, veteranarian, paralegal become low-wage jobs when they are "feminized" by becoming majority female professions.

A #LaborDay prayer for moms and dads whose daily (unpaid!) work and calling includes the glorious duty of diapers:
"Heavenly Father, in such menial moments as this—the changing of a diaper—I would remember this truth: My unseen labors are not lost, for it is these repeated acts of small sacrifice that are slowly being sewn into a quilt of lovingkindness that swaddles this child.
"I am not just changing a diaper. By love & service I'm tending a budding heart that, rooted early in such grace-filled devotion, might one day be more readily-inclined to bow to your compassionate conviction—knowing itself then as both receptacle & reservoir of heavenly grace.

I know it’s Labor Day weekend, but please remember @realDonaldTrump still has 500 refugee children locked up in cages he separated from their parents. And he hasn’t even tried to reunite them. Plus thousands died in Puerto Rico. Someone needs to be held accountable for all of it.
