#OnThisDay, as the devout William Rosecrans galloped to the rear and, in his own words, “prostrated myself in spirit at the feet of our Crucified Lord and implored His most Sacred heart to pity us,” George Thomas was NOT in the mood for pity. He was too busy building a line.
Rosecrans was a complex dude and a titan of his era, but at Chickamauga, his wild temperament got the best of him and he became one of the few men on Earth who could say, “I was outgeneraled by Braxton Bragg.” (It hurts just to type that. Let’s give Longstreet the credit.)
As his right wing crumbled, Rosecrans beat feet to Chattanooga, where he was helped from his horse “faint and ill, stunned by sudden calamity.” An observer said: “Chickamauga is as fatal a name in our history as Bull Run.”

Only someone forgot to tell George Thomas.

The Battle of Bosworth Field took place #OnThisDay in 1485 in Leicestershire. During the ultimate battle of the 'War of the Roses', Richard III was killed & Henry Tudor took the throne. Richard's remains were mutilated, then quietly buried, until recovered & identified in 2013.
Fun fact, there was one more battle after Bosworth. In 1487, a pretender called Lambert Simnel, posing as Edward, Earl of Warwick, was installed at the head of an army by Plantagenet interests.

The battle of Stoke Field was a bloody brawl near East Stoke on the 16th of June.
You'd think Simnel's army would have won - it was full of mercenaries with terrifying things called 'guns'.

Still, faster to fire arrows than a gun at this time - the Tudor army riddled them with arrows.

Simnel was captured, but Henry VII spared him - even gave him a job!

Let’s talks some history & how #Iran’s regime manipulates facts.

#OnThisDay, 65 years ago, a coup d'état brought an end to Iran’s sole democratically elected government of Dr. Mohammad Mosaddegh.

Why do I say “manipulates” history?

Look at @JZarif’s tweet in this regard.
(3)
He seeks to portray an image of #Iran’s mullahs (currently ruling the country) as a party opposing the 1953 coup d'état backed out by foreign intelligence services enjoying support from Iran’s then mullahs.

Katharina Kepler, mother of the famous astronomer, Johannes Kepler, was arrested for witchcraft #OnThisDay in 1620. Johannes would spend the next year securing her freedom. She died the next year. I wrote about the case more in this article. buff.ly/2lufEVw
Kepler was accused by neighbours that she was feuding with, of making their kids sick - not an uncommon thing.

Unluckily, the local 'vogt', or bailiff, was a guy called Lutherius Einhorn, who was fairly witch-crazy.

Kepler had to unpick the neighbour's stories in detail.
I went to Leonberg, where Katharina's 'trial' took place. This is the former town jail - Katharina was kept below ground in a dank, wet cell.

21-year-old Lewis Powell was hanged #OnThisDay in 1865. He was a conspirator with John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.
One evening in early February, Powell (using the alias "Mr. Wood") appeared at Mary Surratt's boarding house and asked for John Surratt, who was not at home.
He then requested something to eat and a place to stay, and Mrs. Surratt granted both requests after her son returned home and vouched for "Mr. Wood". Powell told Louis Weichmann, who was a boarder in the house, that "Wood" was a clerk in Parr's china shop in Baltimore.

Murphy grew up on a sharecropper's farm in Hunt County, Texas.

Marilyn Monroe was born #OnThisDay 1926.

Famous for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters, Monroe became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and was emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality.
On August 5, 1962, she died at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles. Although Monroe's death was ruled a probable suicide, several conspiracy theories have been proposed in the decades following her death.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage and married at the age of sixteen.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was born #OnThisDay 1863. His assassination in Sarajevo precipitated Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia. This caused the Central Powers and Serbia's allies to declare war on each other, starting World War I.
Franz Ferdinand was born in Graz, Austria, the eldest son of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria (younger brother of Franz Joseph and Maximilian) and of his second wife, Princess Maria Annunciata of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.
In 1875, when he was only eleven years old, his cousin Duke Francis V of Modena died, naming Franz Ferdinand his heir on condition that he add the name Este to his own. Franz Ferdinand thus became one of the wealthiest men in Austria.
