I really wish all the panicked, breathless newspaper articles about “banning” clapping at universities would do a little basic research and stop calling sign language applause “jazz hands.”
A little history: The #neurodiversity movement picked up sign language applause because the noise can be painful for some #ActuallyAutistic people. We started doing this in the 1990’s when we started doing IRL events like Autreat. Noise isn’t such a big deal on Usenet or IRC.
I don’t know enough about #Deaf history to know when applause was added to the American or British Sign Language vocabularies but they definitely did it first.

A friend recently asked me why I'm so adamant that a #callforpapers must have a #diversity #inclusion section. Wouldn't a blind, merit-based selection process lead to better content? They were convinced by my answer, which I share here. Thread:

Consider three sessions covering the same broad subject area. Speaker A's proposal is short and only covers the basics. Speaker B's proposal contains spelling and grammatical errors and unconventional English. Speaker C's proposal is well-written, comprehensive, and in-depth. 1/
Speaker A is a woman who has #impostorsyndrome and is harassed by anonymous men on Twitter who belittle her decade-long expertise. She writes a short and basic proposal because she is no longer confident in her skill. Speaker C is a man whose expertise is seldom questioned. 2/

Deaf/Disabled folks need to show up for #PrisonStrike2018.

At least 60% imprisoned folks are Disabled. They are targeted for no/lowest wages and other discrimination: no access to ed, programs, services, info, mental/healthcare.

#PrisonStrike2018 supports #Disabled/#Deaf ppl

Exhibit A: One demand's to end to Prison Litigation Reform Act #PLRA

PLRA's behind Deaf/Disabled imprisoned folks not being able to get support fr attys. If you struggle w English/can't get through complaints, nothing can be done.
Literally every #PrisonStrike2018 demand helps disabled immprisoned folks even more than abled folks. Take a look at the demands for yourself (linked) & commit to daily posts, convos, teaching, etc. w/i your Commmnity.

ADULTS! Why are we inviting cops into marginalized communities (e.g., camps/school/universities serving Disabled/Deaf Youth) to do "know your rights" trainings?

You're setting our Youth up for terrible injustice.

Please stop this & please intervene if you see any announcements.
Cobb Co. doing #KYR+live shooter simulations w #Deaf/#Disabled kids!

This is what NOT to do folks!

Know what Cobb Co did to a real life BlackLatinx Deaf man?

Arrested & deprived him of comm. for 2yrs 8mos
Appointed atty known for shoddy wk
Sentenced him to LIFE!

#DeafInPrison White presenting Deaf/Disabled children pointing guns at a projector screen with a car, people, building, and other visuals while a police officer looks on while leaning against a wall in a dark room.
This is absolutely outrageous!

This is so problematic I don't even know what to say.

A Deaf student was literally snatched up & caged--& will be caged for LIFE by this very dept. His kid--younger than these kids visits him in prison now!

I'm literally ill from this. SMGDH.

As a deaf gamer I see a fair amount of #gamedevelopment questions asking how #gamedev's can support the #deaf and #HardofHearing folk.

I've got a few ideas and of course anyone else with ideas can reply to this or share it.

• Directional Waveform HUD

A toggle feature which could hover over the player. Whichever way the audio is coming from the waveform reacts. Would be no different to hearing directional footsteps. Perhaps a The Division tracking HUD for inspiration?

Example with #Fortnite
• Vignette Cues

Could get mistaken for health depletion, but this could indicate sound in specific games. Perhaps a horror/thriller.

An example in the bottom left, ideally, it would follow the audio around the screen. Although maybe not in front of the player.
