Our @DSP_SPE team represents the student voice in #scienceadvice at the #INGSA_NA18 workshop today among experts from around the world π¬ππππ
& thx @PeterGluckman for your video introduction, we hope we can meet again soon! Especially with the establishment of an @INGSciAdvice chapter for #NorthAmerica
Regional chapters have a governance structure from that region, incl key academic leaders, policy leaders, students, and more β‘οΈ who develop work plan projects collaboratively. This drives #CapacityBuilding for #scienceadvice in these regions #INGSA_NA18#scipol
Ingredients at @INGSciAdvice 1. Identify the types of knowledge needed 2. Innovate responsibly 3. Be knowledge brokers 4. Build collective intelligence (large groups can be more intelligent than sum of their parts) 5. Strengthen science & art of #scienceadvice 6. Foster humility
First Q: what is intersection of #scienceadvice to sources outside govt? A: intent is to be inclusive, important to formulate the questions we seek to answer w/ all groups. All groups should have opportunity to add to the discussion and to @INGSciAdvice network #INGSA_NA18
#scienceadvice is not an exact science but is a team sport. Its ecosystem is critical in Canada π¨π¦, where we are still building it, with colleagues and partners like @RSCTheAcademies, @sciencepolicy, and @DSP_SPE. Challenges & opportunities are intertwined - @ChiefSciCan
Dr. Nemer hopes to be the first of many in the position of @ChiefSciCan, and looks to the role of science in the world ahead of @g7#G7 and the role Canada can play in this global goal #INGSA_NA18
. @SciChefQC says trust is the key β‘οΈ in a #scienceadvice role, the scientists you represent must trust you, and the government / policymakers you work for/with must trust your advice, which often stems from the #evidence presented to you by these scientists #INGSA_NA18
. @MollyShoichet is thankful for advice on #scienceadvice from the community of advisors incl @ChiefSciCan & @SciChefQC we have in π¨π¦. Key challenge is disparity btw trusting scientists and trusting #science. Need to build culture of science in govt & with public at large
Jeff Reading @SPH_Iloilo discusses importance of bringing #science into #policy and its impact on #Reconciliation#INGSA_NA18 β‘ strategic funding has been used to foster the role of #indigenous people in the research into their own health, this needs to feed forward
Gordon McBean @ICSUnews discusses how @INGSciAdvice can address global challenges through #scienceadvice β‘οΈ it's complex and includes many players, but it is necessary to address these issues globally to have impact locally #INGSA_NA18
. @ValPatreau - public finance is also not unlimited, not all science can be funded and so it is in our interest to interact in #scipol & #scienceadvice to ensure that there is positive impact on all sides #INGSA_NA18 π + must break down silos, need multidisciplinarity
. @SciChefQC congratulates @ValPatreau to have run for office as a #scientist - the great majority of elected officials do their very best to represent the interests of their citizens, and given short time frame for #decisionmaking the integration of #evidence is admirable
. @ChiefSciCan mentions the value-added of #scientists engaging with the public #scicomm, that we need to connect the dots and inform not just on the science itself but also on why science is so important to society #INGSA_NA18
Abderrahmne Rida @auf_org adds that training of #NextGeneration in university must reflect the job market and research funding, we must adapt our training to these contexts... "ce sont des questions que l'on doit poser pour nos jeunes chercheurs"
Nous sommes π―π―π― d'accord π
SPE Co-President @sung_vanessa asks: the 6th ingredient of fostering #humility is all about building trust w/ the public, #science is only one voice among many in their decisions and how they want #policy developed. How do we build capacity to address this?
.@ChiefSciCan says important to understand science advisors are not policymakers, and the responsibility cannot lie entirely on #scienceadvice. @SciChefQC adds, must remember distinction btw advocace and advice or we can lose credibility. @MollyShoichet adds, we are nonpartisan
... the responsibility may therefore lie more in the communication of the importance of #science and #evidence and make plain to #policymakers the consequences of different options presented in #scienceadvice in broader context of the decisions that must be made #INGSA_NA18
... and a public which asks their representatives to value #evidence will be the strongest driver of long-term #scienceadvice mechanisms.
Jeff Reading @SPH_Iloilo adds long-term funding to #scienceadvice mechanisms would also be an important step if we want long-term thinking
The workshop starts now β‘οΈ what are top 3 critical issues or structural themes in #Scienceadvice that an @INGSciAdvice presence in North America could address? #INGSA_NA18
When #science meets #politics on #GMO β‘οΈ when faced with the same evidence, some countries overwhelmingly agree, others overwhelmingly against #scipol#scidip
